North Fork Bullets

They are definitely longer. The shape and length of these specific one's are that of the original 8mm S.s. german 198gr loading FMJ's from WWII. Very sleek considering they're called semi spitzer.
That could very well be the issue - I had a 375HH that would’nt shoot the NF 350 gr at all but loved the NF 300 gr … had to be the bullet length/twist rate

I bought several boxes of 180gr and 200gr marked SS in 8mm of which both have Hollow points. No lead exposed. I thought that to be odd as the marketing pictures do indeed show exposed lead. I recovered one in the berm and it did look like it was the proper bullet and not the copper version.

Hmm, well this is very strange indeed. I couldn't tell you how many NF SS bullets I've loaded in various 7mm, .308, .375, .458 and .470 loads and I've never seen a SS version that had a hollow point and didn't have an obvious exposed lead tip.

The only hollow point I've seen would be the Cup Point Solids I've loaded for my .470NE and the CPX (full copper point expanding) on their website (I've not seen those in person).

Trivial question but did you weigh these NFs to see if they were the same as box flap indicates?

What powder and loads are you using for CPX bullets? Appreciate if you can share..

I have not, but I'll get around to it tonight and check them on the scale.
Box is marked S S. Weight is on point. A true 180gr and true 200gr. I was comparing a few bullets and apart from the flat base, there is nothing about the 8mm version being Semi Spitzer. These things are as slick and if not more than Sierra 175gr pro hunter Spitzer. Pictured Left to right. 175gr Sierra, 180gr NF, 198gr fmjbt.

I guess I'll have to try a couple other powders and hope for the best. I cringe thinking I'm wasting shots when they're costing me 120$ per 50.

Sorry I can't help with the CPX, haven't even seen them in person. The CPS I've only loaded in my .470NE. I'm using IMR3031 with a wad made out of backer rod to fill up the empty space. There's a thread on here about using this powder with a filler I'm guessing you've seen.

For my .375HH, I use IMR4350 for both the SS and FPS (flat point solids).

I'm loading 180gr SS 8x57. Tired H4895 and Imr 4895. 50gr's. Velocity is 2680 fps out of a 22 inch. I'm seating the bullets right up to the last groove up top. COAL 3.2"

Same powder charge shoot 180gr Lapua Natruralis, 180gr TSX, 185gr rem corelokt, 180gr ballistic tips around 1". I'm seeing 1.7-2.5" groups with NF.

@mauser98
Have you tried using a different powder like varget, CFE223 or H4350
That may cure your problem.
Bob

I haven't tried anything else other than the 4895's. I think CFE 223 would be a little fast for a 180gr? I'm loading 160gr ttsx with CFE 223 at 3000 fps out of my 8x57 though.

@PHOENIX PHIL
If'n a 300gn out of a 375 at 2,500fps is fine for buff at 50-100 yards, How would a 310gn Woodleigh RNSP or FN solid at 2,455fps out of a 35 Whelen perform on them. They have the same SD as a 350gn 375.
Just asking for a friend

Can you share what powder and barrel length is giving this velocity? I don't expect the charge weight...that's proprietary! LOL

I have never seen such velocities with the 310 quoted. Here is the only Woodleigh data I have found:

Varget 46 to 52 gr 1868 to 2135 fps
H4350 51 to 59 gr 1880 to 2200 fps
Reloder 15 46 to 53 gr 1897 to 2140 fps
Reloder 17 51 to 58 gr 1890 to 2215 fps
N140 45 to 52 gr 1880 to 2150 fps
N540 48.5 to 53 gr 2020 to 2200 fps

@tarbe
I have a 25" barrel.
The load I use uses H4350/adi 2209
The max load of 59 gn of this powder is a slightly compressed load and only rums at relatively low pressure ( under 50,000 psi from memory).

By using a 24" drop tube you can slowly trickle in 62gn of the same powder in Remington cases. Yes it will take a little time but worth it. The drop tube allows the powder to settle better into the case and this will give you the same level as 59 gn without the drop tube.
This will be a compressed load but I still only use a large rifle primer and get reliable ignition.
This is over the recommendation but I haven't had an issue with this load in my rifle and the load was developed during our summer with temps 38-40 degrees Celsius
The usual applies approach this load with caution and work up. From case head measurement and primer observations this load is still well within allowed pressure and shows no difference to the standard load.
This load is very potent and recoil is increased but still very manageable.

Good stuff...thanks Bob!!

I have used aluminum arrows as drop tubes in the past!
@tarbe
I use a 6mm aluminium tube with a powder funnel taped to the top and a modified caulking gun nozzle taped to the bottom with the tip dut off to give a 30 cal hole. This fits the case mouth nicely and allows the powder to flow freely when done slowly.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
