No-Man's Land - Fact or Fiction?

The book, "In The Salt" recommends adherence to "the pay line" which means to keep your shots lower than an imaginary horizontal line which excludes any upper torso shots. Says the odds are best for a kill below "the pay line."

I shot two deer in the spine-DRT. Destroyed much of the backstrap. I shot a Kudu just below the spine and it dropped in its tracks. Hydrostatic shock turned the rib meat into mush.

One of the best post on the subject @BryceM Congrats!

As a rule, most shots that end in an animal instantly dropping, then regaining his feet and lost is an over the spine shot. Any shot under the spine will result in a dead animal. If you don't believe me, ask a doctor. Sometimes, a lost animal is the result of poor tracking job. I remember a deer I shot with my bow. There was a twig on the way so I shot him may be three inches behind where I would have shot him. I was still in the lungs, but instead of cutting major over the heart arteries, I just punctured the lungs. What would have been an under 100 yards tracking job turned into 450 yards.

Just never shoot over the half of the animal.

Great stuff. I was taught from the beginning to break down a deer with your first shot if possible. Tuck it behind the shoulder (broadside) or if it is a really big buck, take the shoulders themselves out. I haven't lost one yet...knock on wood.

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
