New member from Montana

Hello all,

Recently been thinking of doing a South Africa hunt after several friends over the years are more recently have gone and told me they had a blast. To be honest I am a bit overwhelmed with the choices of outfitters, and not knowing much going into it. I've read a few threads on here, and a handful of outfitters were mentioned. Also my friends have recommended their outfitters as well, so doesn't narrow it down much. I am also not sure if I could get booking if I was planning to go anywhere from June to August this year.

You will find many great outfitters here. Planning is half the fun.
You will absolutely be able to get a hunt scheduled for next year. T
The show season is about to start after the first of the year. Thats is an excellent time to meet outfitters and make plans also.

Where in Montana,? I’m also from Montana and planning my first one as well and initially had those same feelings of being overwhelmed but it becomes a great and fun process. You will field a bunch of proposals from different outfitters on this platform and then just do some Research on each of them and then start to narrow them down based on their proposals. a lot have YouTube videos which has been helpful as well. I still have a list of about 6 outfitters we are narrowing down and that has been the hardest part because they each are so awesome! May have to come back to Africa again on another trip just to try out a different outfitter.

Hello everyone,

I’m new to the forum and to the world of safaris. I'm a lifelong hunter from Montana, and I’m planning to take my family of four (with kids aged 14 and 12) on a trip that includes hunting, sightseeing, and experiencing local culture. We’re mostly interested in hunting plains game.

I would appreciate any feedback on which countries to visit and recommendations for outfitters. I have the opportunity to purchase a safari package with Theron Safaris, who seem great and reputable. However, my only concern is that the hunt is being arranged through Charity Safaris, and I...

I'm up in the Flathead. Yeah I am doing research now, we had been planning on just doing a regular safari (photo) in South Africa at some point, seeing Krueger, Sabi sands etc and had been talking about going this summer. However, now with friends talking about the hunting and how much fun they had I am now looking into doing a hunt. I would like to be able to see the parks too at some point, need to figure out logistics but I think we can do 3 weeks. Maybe a week seeing the parks then the rest hunting.

I am also trying to convince the wife lol, but she is hunts too.

oh man if you have 3 weeks you can do it proper! A lot of these outfits offer hunting and photo and game drive safaris, excursions to Kruger, cultural excursions etc. you name it.

Welcome to AH. Spent a lot of time hunting in MT years ago (Thomson Falls, Plains, Cabin City, Jordan).
You have come to the right place for info on planning a safari, preparing for it and hunt reports from members that will often give you real time, blow by blow of hunts.
Don’t just look at South Africa. Namibia is another great choice with similar pricing.
As others have said, the DSC and SCI shows are early next year. A great opportunity to meet the outfitters face to face. Many of the AH sponsor outfitters will be there.
There is nothing like a first safari. Good luck in your search.

Bozeman seems to have blown up with people, same here in the Flathead, but not as bad. Every time I drive through Bozeman it looks like it getting more crowded.

Oh man tell me about it…I’m a native Montana from Helena and moved here before the boom…just got to hang on until the kiddos graduate and then we are off to a smaller town. Yeah the flathead has grown a ton too, w scone up every spring for sports and it grows every year
