I did not find it too high when I pointed-faced this specific setup. This mounts are the original Sauer-Mauser quick-detach mounts. I believe they are a bit higher than usual is due to the iron sights in the rifle so they don't interfere while aiming. I did like it and it was easy to gather scope reticle the way it was. Nevertheless, you can mount a scope directly to the action with Talleys as you mentioned but the iron sights might get in the way.

By "might get in the way" do you mean seeing the front sight in the scope? With a straight tube objective lens I can't see how the rear sight would physically bump the scope even if mounted very low. I can see the front sight in my 1-4x30mm Bushnell scope and it is mounted so low the bolt handle only clears the scope's zoom ring by a paper thickness. But turn it up to about 2.5x and and the front sight starts to disappear. Even at a hundred yards I cannot imagine the front sight would obscure a buffalo size target to any degree. At fifty yards on 1x the front sight would indeed be in sight but really immaterial for placing the shot into a heart the size of a beer fridge. However, if Mr Buff opts for fight instead of flight, I want him in view instantly when my gun is mounted. No fiddling to find the crosshairs. Have not had the experience yet but I'm sure I would not even notice the front sight in the field of view if a buffalo is incoming at 50 yards.

Edit: My 1990s Winchester Safari Express rear sight has a leaf that folds down. This seems to be rare and in fact now discontinued by Winchester (and also Williams who apparently makes Winchester sights). Most express rear sights have at least one permanent leaf. I'm wondering if my scope on low power will pick up the rear sight if leaf is up. I'll have to check when I get back to the house. That could be a more significant obstruction.

No, can't see the rear sight leaf with scope at 1x. Only the barrel and front sight.

Rivers and Glen and Field Ethos will be at the DSC Carolina’s Foundation big bore shoot on October, 18 with a demo rifle if you’d like to shoot it.
There will also be a demo Sauer 505, Blaser R8 and Rigby Highland Stalker.

So just how many times does anyone use the open sights these days? That debate on the position of them is wasting words... I have been on 30 plus guided hunts and never once used open sights for any reason.
Unless you practice with them and are extremely confident, forget them.

Unless you practice with them and are extremely confident, forget them.

I use open sights on about 1/2 my rifles most with peeps but a couple with express sights. I am confident with them out to 200 yards.

Very interested in this rifle. There is certainly a lot to like about it, but I have a small concern. According to the person I spoke with at Rivers and Glen (who were very nice and answered all my questions) the sling mount is permanently attached to the barrel band.

My concern is about the mount slapping against the barrel under recoil every time the rifle is fired without a sling. (similar to the issue of a free moving stacking swivel hitting the gas cylinder on an M1 Garand during recoil). And as the rifle uses a standard sling swivel stud mount on the stock, I just do not see any advantage to this set up, and I see several potential negatives (like also making the sling more difficult to take on and off quickly versus just using two sling studs)

Can anyone share any insight on this? Am I missing something?

Design flaw, easily fixed with a couple of wraps of electrical tape.

I believe it can be removed. It's put in place by a locking screw as seen in some of their other models, including the latest M98. However, it's an easy fix installing a removable sling loop. I believe, It can easily be done by gunsmith or even own JP-Sauer gunsmith in their San Antonio office.

See the video I posted a few post above. Take a look of the barrel bang sling that look like it has a removable lever or a screw.

Might just be some confusion between what they said (likely correct) and how you're interpreting it. The barre band, which is the mount for the sling swivel is permanent to the barrel - the sling swivel itself is likely removable.
