As someone who had to make this decision about 3 months ago, I went with the 300 H&H. A part of the decision was ammo availability.
I might have gone with the 8x68 if ammo was freely available.
I went long range shooting about a month ago and the guy next to me had cartridge I could quite place. I asked him and he said,"it's the best hunting caliber in the world". Beautiful custom 300 H&H 26" barrel. Silently I was happy to have my choice validated.
It sits between a 30-06 and a 300 WM. Flat shooter, 200gr plus bullet choices for big'uns, or down to 180gr for medium size PG, if you're inclined. Check the drift drop numbers on it, pretty impressive stuff.
Edit: I'm a lefty, I would never find a 300 H&H LH, so it had to be custom built for me. I like the fact that I will get a fitting so only good things from here on out.
I've decided on the 300 H&H. Gave the deposit and go-ahead yesterday.
It was a mad rush to secure the LH action but fingers crossed, we're all good. Told the builder to match stock styles, sights, etc because the rifles will be part of a set, which he was happy to do. The technical aspects are up to him. He says he might be able to land them both on my desk at the same time but doing it right takes priority.
Needless to say, I'm stoked. I've got to find a way to wait. I'll probably never need another hunting rifle. (wink wink)
Appreciate all your input.
