Mauser rifles I came across yesterday

Nice Mausers

That riser were a specialty by some higher end makers like Schiwy of Berlin .

Best sporting rifles ever to be commercially manufactured. And unlike today’s gunsmiths (who often simply rebarrel military surplus Mauser Model 98s to different calibers), each caliber which the Mauser Oberndorf Sporter was offered in… actually had a specialized action built just for it.

On a related subject, the modern Mauser Model 98 Magnum is offered in three calibers:
.375 Holland & Holland Magnum
.416 Rigby
.450 Rigby

Mauser should definitely begin offering these again in .404 Jeffery. Sort of as homage to the good old days.

While not .404j, I asked Mauser to make a .500j at the DSC summer expo. I was told that I would have to purchase 15 and that they would be $17k each. I wouldn't hold my breath for any other cartridges coming from them.

Any actions Mauser made for its brand rifles were always tailored to the caliber. Had to be if the rails, ramp, bolt face, etc. were to operate correctly. A fine gunmaker can do the same with a military action and produce a rifle just as well made. It was my understanding that Mauser made magnum actions and sold them to big name gunmakers unfinished. Rigby, for example, then had to finish them up to meet specs for the ordered caliber. I would imagine Mauser similarly produced "blank" magnum actions en masse in lots and then refined them in its own facility as needed to fill particular orders. I find it hard to believe Mauser was totally retooling to make each action from scratch to fill orders. But maybe I'm wrong. I believe Mauser sells generic magnum actions today ... they're just very hard to find (and very expensive!). I was looking for one when I built my 404.

Sounds like a proposition for a group buy on here

Sort of…
Today’s fine gunmakers can indeed produce an excellent rifle on a military action but I don’t know of any that will make bottom metal of different dimensions for each chambering as Mauser did.
The magazine length, width at the front and rear and taper to the magazine were all specific to different cartridges they offered.
Oberndorf sporting rifles are simply the best designed and manufactured bolt rifles ever made.
Sure, a custom rifle can be more refined in appointments but for a catalog firearm, nothing beats an original Mauser sporter!

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ

What is the minimum you would take.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
