Hello everyone. I will be hunting in Namibia next August for leopard and plains game. Does anyone feel I should take anti malaria medication?

Johnny, from my personal experience malaria does not occur in this region of Namibia, so I would personally not take any malaria medication, but the choice is really yours. Should you decide to take malaria medication, consult your doctor well before your departure. Feel free also to check out the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) for their recommendations for travel to Namibia: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/namibia.

Thank you again. I will see what the booking agent has to say.

Jerome should know. I hunted that area in July '07, we took malaria meds with us and nearly got laughed out of camp! I didn't take mine after the first couple days of near freezing cold and ZERO mosquitos.

LOL...Ok then . Thanks everyone

I have seen a grand total of three mosquitos in 21 days in Namibia between Otavi and Otjiwarongo.
Never took Malaria meds.

I was shocked to see that those three mosquitos had survived a snow and a bunch of frosts.

Like J said, talk to the doc and make an informed decision with your health in mind.

So in that region during August it will be cold correct? As you said talk to my doc and also I will speak to the booking agent as he has been there and hunted many times.

It is winter there.
It can get below freezing and have frost in the mornings.

Guess I need to bring some "deer hunting" clothes for the mornings and then peel down. Since it's a leopard hunt I would assume I could be in the blind at night and it could be cold.

Yes bring some warm winter clothing, you will be glad you did during that time of the year… Even a warm hat, one that covers your ears can serve a dual purpose and warm gloves would not be over the top very early in the morning in the back of the hunting vehicle. It can also get sometimes surprisingly cold during the middle of the day in a blind in the shade… By the way hunting in Namibia may not take place during the period between 30 minutes after sunset in any day and 30 minutes before sunrise the following day.

Great advise thanks.

Have hunted winter three times in Namibia - water bottles froze in the back of the land cruiser several mornings. Only worry about anti-malarials in the Caprivi.

And though Jerome is correct, that last half hour can get stretched a bit while sitting for a leopard.

Thanks everyone for the advise. Guess I bought a 2.5x10x55 scope for no reason. I assumed I would be hunting in the dark.....

You have a great leopard scope and I suspect your PH will stretch that last half hour a lot. With whom will you be hunting?

I will be hunting with Nambi Sun Safaris/Otjiwa Safaris. Best part is I only pay the trophy fee on the cat once taken. Kinda gives them ALOT of incentive to get one in the salt. As I am sure you know most guys charge for the hunt period kill or not.

You will have a GREAT time with Otjiwa Safaris. You DO NOT need to take any malaria medication. Its still winter in Namibia - cold in the early mornings and late afternoons and during the day it can get to 25 degrees. But this area is dry and it is NOT a malaria area.
ENJOY your hunt in Namibia and hope you have success with the leopard. Looking forward to see your photos.
