It's been awhile since I posted or contributed to this forum so I thought I would do a light reintroduction. It isn't that I didn't want to contribute, it's more that I simply didn't have or didn't take the time. Life has been busy and taking the time to sit down and type dosen't come easy for me.
During my hiatus I periodically (sometimes daily) clicked on this Forum to catch up on and research all things Africa. Nowhere else can one find such a wealth of knowledge. My background has been working for the same company for more than 40 years. I retired this past March. I enjoyed designing custom HVAC systems, as it was rewarding to help homeowners save energy and increase their comfort. I made a comfortable living, but financially what really allowed me to pursue my passion was to prioritize hunting by forgoing expenses that others may partake in. This self-motivated approach allowed me to go on hunts in multiple countries.
I have been a hunter for the past 61 years shooting a cottontail rabbit with my bow at the age of 6 years. For most of those years I primarily hunted with archery equipment. Alas, I needed to pivot as a vertebrae issue in my neck prevented me from drawing my normal draw-weight hunting bow. Although I can still handle a low (40#) draw-weight, I have started to hunt more with a Ravin crossbow and rifle. At first it bothered me, however I am finding great joy in spot and stalk rather than ambush. Honestly, it really doesn't matter how or with which tool I hunt with as I am addicted to the chase. I hope no one ever comes up with a cure.
I will be posting a report of my recent hunt in the East Cape with Marius Goosen of KMG Hunting Safaris. The title will be " Africa Is Once Again Calling My Name." Please excuse my spelling and grammar as well as my style which may differ from others that have written reports. I hope you enjoy my ramblings as I take you along on my adventure. This was my 7th trip to Africa, spending time with multiple outfitters and PH. I can't say I ever had a bad PH. What I can tell you, Marius is right up there with the best. I chose KMG because of the many glowing reports right here on this forum. Right away I noticed his communication skills were way above average for an outfitter from Africa. This was a huge plus for me when I was planning and comparing. His responses to my questions were direct and honest. I first met Marius face to face when I arrived at the lodge. I knew right off that his demeanor was on-point for us to have an enjoyable hunt together. As we headed out hunting I noticed he adopted a predatory strategy. You could see it in his face and almost hear the wheels turning as he strategized our next move. His personality lent itself well with mine as I have been characterized as highly driven, never give up when in pursuit of my target animal. I also was born a hunter.
