Right lets say a double is regulated to shoot a 480 grn bullet can you load develop a round to shoot a 500 grn or even a 450?? I've read that you can control the speed of the projectile to get the convergence right. If this is so I might consider a 450 NE 3 1/4!! I did post this on the double rifle section but there has been no reply's so I thought I would try the reloading section.

Many thanks as ever

Sometimes another combination of load and bullet weight can be made to work in a double originally set up for a different load - but rarely - at least in my experience. Usually the search is to try and determine something close to the original regulation - that can be trial enough! Another option is to find a load that each barrel likes regardless of regulation and then send the rifle off to be reregulated for that load. There are a couple of people in this country capable of doing that work ( JJ Perodeau is the only one I would trust). It is also an extremely expensive project.

Not sure what 20 grs of weight either side of 480 gets you.

@Red Leg I'm in the UK so I should be able to find folk that can re regulate. I do wonder how much difference 20 grns would make?? Anybody know?

In the U.K. you certainly can.

My question/comment was rhetorical not literal. To any Buffalo that ever walked the earth, no difference at all.

But what difference would it make to group size and POI? I know you have a double have you tried differing weights?

LOL what I said in the first response - what was it Churchill said - "the Americans and British are one people separated only by a common language." Yes - it - can - and - likely - will - make - a - huge - difference! Sometimes - rarely - powder type and load can be adjusted sufficiently to regulate a new bullet weight. However, should you buy any previously owned English double, regardless of caliber, I would make my first priority trying to find a load which works to the original regulated bullet weight. Because you likely will not have the actual bullets used in the original regulation (which may have had different bearing surfaces, jacket material, density, etc), I suspect that project will prove more than challenge enough.

@Red Leg it always makes me laugh when I see American English as a language option next to English. English is the correct choice. Besides English is my third language among others

My 450 NE 31/4" shoots 450g TSX and 500g Hornady on the same regulation with the same charge. These were developed after purchase as the rifle came with no data.
I have also managed to get the same out of 350g Hornady and Swift Aframe.
It is all about the speed I found, or I was just lucky:whistle:

I even managed to run a 550g Woodleigh to the same POI.

I guess it's all about giving it a go. I have a 416 rigby sabatti extractor inbound from Italy. Should be with me I October can't wait

I know nothing about regulating double rifles but I was just thinking that if the original load was known that a ballistic software program like Quick Load might be of some use in finding a suitable substitute. I don't know that it will work but it seems plausible.

BTW I am curious, what are your first and second languages if "English" is your third?

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
