Loading a Double Rifle quickly

2 cartridges in the palm of my left hand, break the double holding the rifle with the trigger hand, two new cartridges go straight in from the left hand and the shut the rifle.

Hellow gentlemen. I dont grab the ammo between fingers .First shot is everything,i just reload very similar way of the shotgun shooter.

Exactly! Just like a SxS or OU shotgun. Nothing faster.

I am a Cowboy Action Shooter and I use the skills from reloading the S/S shotgun to quickly reload my Heym 500 Nitro Express. I use a leather ammo carrier that my leather-worker made for me which is the same style as my CAS shotgun carrier. After I break open the double rifle and the empties are ejected I reach down with my left hand to pull two shells at a time from my belt using only two fingers and thumb of my left hand while at the same time my right hand brings the double rifle up to my shoulder and pulls it in tight and I get a cheek-weld on the stock. This places the open chambers directly into my line of sight and right below the target or animal. I bring the two cartridges in my left hand over the chambers in a vertical position with the bullet tips at the top of the chamber opening and then quickly rock them both into the chambers at the same time. Then my left hand goes under the forearm and pushes the barrels up and closed. I am then in my shooting position and the target/animal is in my red dot sight.

I have used this technique on several buff hunts as well as my two hippos, two lions and one rhino for the followup shots (some were needed, some not). I practice this reloading technique every time I go to the range with the 500. I cannot emphasis how much this reloading technique has helped my double rifle shooting as well as my confidence in handling a double rifle on a DG hunt.

Robert Churchill in his book, "Game Shooting" has an interesting take on loading a double. He lets the first of the two drop lower in his hand, and placing the lower cartridge in the start of the chamber, he rotates his hand, using the first cartridge as a swivel point to align the second cartridge, at which time he lets both fall into the chambers.
Of course, anyone with extractors has to first decide how to clear the chambers.

Agree with the thump and two fingers…however the key is practice whatever your method is until it is second nature. I learned this lesson the hard way with my lion charge video posted for all to see…I had practiced everything but fast reloading and it almost cost me…never again

AND spacing them more correctly.
All of these beat the "bumfuddle" default method.
In cowboy action shooting the goal is to insert both shotgun shells at the same time into the chambers with one fluid motion....this is my goal when it comes to loading two 500NE cartridges in the Heym.

From my CAS experience, I have found that when loading two into the chambers at the same time the cartridges must be together in the belt loops with no space between them (see the pic of my ammo carrier above). When two cartridges are spaced apart and pulled out at the same time with one hand the cartridges often want to go in different directions and by the time the cartridges reach the chambers they are not lined up to both be inserted at the same time....this results in the shooter/hunter being forced to load one at a time or, worse yet, drop one to gain or keep control over the other before inserting it and then reaching down for another cartridge to fill the second chamber.

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
