Kafue lechwe

@RBurg44, would you consider doing a few of the lechwe species in Zambia?
The Kafue Lechwe on the Kafue flats, Black Lechwe in the Bangweulu swamps and the Red Lechwe in one of the Game Management Areas?
You get the 2 species of Lechwe that are unique to Zambia and the red Lechwe which can be found in Zambia, Namibia and Botswana as endemic species.
The Black Lechwe and Kafue Lechwe can each be had on a 1-3 day hunt depending on how you structure it.
Would certainly make for an interesting hunting story how hunting them all came together.

Unfortunately I can’t add to any rsa outfits that have the Kafue Lechwe.

I understand what @Red Leg is saying and I agree. I shot mine in RSA nice lechwe but would I have preferred to shoot it in Zambia? Yes of course. I was there on a mini hunt/vacation opportunity presented itself so I took it. If I make it over to Zambia one day I just may add another one but who knows. Much rather shot a sitatunga to be honest

Not what I am saying at all Sand Rat. My point is that there are certain species, because of the unique nature of their habitat, the hunting of them becomes an extraordinary experience in and of itself - not just the acquisition of a head on the wall. And frankly, I do clearly see a difference between a free-range Texas Audad which has called the Glass Mountains home for six generations, and one languishing behind a fence in Kerrville (or a whitetail, or red stag for that mattter).

No one has to agree with me, that the total hunting experience for certain species is still part of their allure. But I think some few do. Mountain Nyala, Bongo, LDE, Hartman Zebra, and yes, the Kafue Lechwe fall into that category for me among African game. I mean, I assume someone will eventually figure out how to get a Marco Polo to survive a Texas summer - woudn’t that be a proud addition to anyone’s collection.

If experiencing that hunt in its unique environment is not important to you - then fine. The Limpopo can indeed provide almost anything.
But back to my original point, if I see one of these species in your trophy room, my immediate desire is to hear about the hunt.

There are many that would look down at the way you and I hunt free range whitetail in Texas because we don't hunt spot and stalk. Though I did kill a nice free range Axis this spring that way. The fact is the majority of the people on this site just don't have the resources to hunt LDE, Bongo, Mountain Nyala and especially a Marco Polo in their natural range or behind a fence in Texas. The Lechwe kind of fell in my lap as an add on the last day of my safari and wasn't planned. Yes I would have rather hunted one in the flood plains of Zambia but may never have the opportunity to hunt there and don't regret taking the one I did. I plan on free range Audad within the next few years in West Texas and hopefully a Yukon Moose one day after I retire. Hope the Whitetail grow big on the San Gabriel this year for you!

A fair chase Aoudad is a great hunt. I did one is west Texas many years ago. Still one of my fondest memories of a hunt here in the states.

Yukon moose is on the top of my list right now. im weighing it with Africa as we speak . its a tough decision

Majority of Lechwe in the Eastern Cape are Kafue Lechwe. Smaller pockets of Red Lechwe around.

I agree that these species hunted in their endemic habit is special. I was fortunate enough to hunt all three this way. I hunted The Black Lechwe in the Bangweulu Swamp in 2004 with Andrew Baldy. We also hunted Sitatunga, unsuccessfully. The poaching in the swamp was terrible in those times.

Next, Was the Red Lechwe in the Okavango Delta in 2006. We had just finished Elephant in NG41 and moved to Ivory Camp in the Delta. Hunting Lechwe out of Mokoros is special and I would want everyone to experience what I did.

Hunted the Kafue with Abie duPlooy in 2009 in think? Anyone who has hunted with Abie knows what that's like.....

We drove deep out onto the flats in the dark, camped out under the stars. Able told me; in the morning, the Lechwe would be all around us. As the sky began to turn from dark to that thin line of light on the horizon, Abie got up and made a pot of coffee. I'll never forget his comment. "Get your rifle ready, pick one and kill it so we can get the hell outta here" I set my rifle's bipod up and picked the best Lechwe in a shootable position.

The hunt was done before the sun came up and I shot it from sitting on my bed. Great memories.

hunting polar bear in Kansas

As someone originally from Kansas I have to say I think the white of a drown wheat field would match a polar bears color perfectly and make for some excellent camouflage . Ignoring the fact it would only come up to its elbow [emoji38].

Overall I agree though I’d rather hunt where things are native but will take what I can get.
The whitetail deer in Kansas are almost entirely of the virginianus subspecies so they aren’t native to Kansas. But how many deer hunters would pass up a Kansas hunt?

Nope, there's quite a number of things I don't have and don't really possess the gut burning desire to go hunt. Nile Lechwe being one of them. Ssese Island Sitatunga being another. I've never really been a collector and don't consider myself one.

I've just tried to shoot all the stuff in one country before calling it done. I've killed every hunt able Zambia species (indigenous) after hunting there 6 years. I made some wonderful friendships in Zambia and fell in love with the Luangwa valley in doing so.

Heading off to Tanzania in four weeks to put a sizable dent in what I haven't hunted there yet.
