In memoriam - Pieter Potgeiter has passed away

Saw the sad news on Facebook today that PH, outfitter and owner of Motsomi Safaris, Pieter Potgeiter has passed away. Pieter was a wonderful person and you definitely left as a friend after hunting with him and his family. He was a long time leader of PHASA and I’m sure many of you may have met him at one of the US hunting shows or were lucky enough to have hunted with him and Motsomi as I did two different times. Condolences to his family Ria,PC, Nadia and his extended family of PHs, trackers, and others. He was a great man who will be missed by many.

A month ago I returned from two spectacular weeks in Tanzania hunting leopard and buffalo with Pieter. Our time together was made even more special as his wife Ria was at camp the entire time, there to meet us each evening with a gin and tonic in hand. Just two days ago I was on WhatsApp with Pieter planning my lion and buffalo hunt next June, my tenth hunt with Pieter and Motsomi. He was a dear friend and I miss him terribly.

My heart goes out to Ria, Nadia, PC, Marco and the extended Motsomi family of trackers, skinners, chefs and camp caretakers. I wish I could ease your sadness.

Pieter had a rare combination of intense focus and constant joy. He was always on the move, never still unless frozen when on game. He reveled in the success of his clients, who became his friends.

I am older than Pieter and vowed to myself that I would hunt Africa every year with him, until I couldn’t. I so desperately wish that dream could have come true.

Pieter was the finest professional hunter I have known. His passion for hunting led him to the Presidency of PHASA, where he served as a staunch advocate for conservation and safari hunting. Pieter’s family, Motsomi, and his friends have lost a loving husband, father, mentor and companion. The hunting world has lost an icon. When I connected with Marco yesterday, he said it best, “We lost a legend today.”

I shared a few photographs on this forum already here and there, but I definitely won’t be posting any on this thread since it’s in memoriam of a deceased fellow sportsman and it would be highly disrespectful/inconsiderate of me. Graham Hunter, I agree with you wholeheartedly. But as I have clarified in my reply to your message, I have not hunted with Peter. And based on what I am seeing from my post on this thread (I had to look at it again), I never made a single indication that I ever have. If I have, then it was purely by accident and I'm sorry.

I have been hunting in Tanzania several times over the years but never with Peter. Although he was very well respected in our circles.

I think that you have made an honest misunderstanding.
