This question is primarily for the taxidermists on the forum. How do you get the goat smell out of taxidermy? I have my MidAsian Ibex back and it is not the worst goat smell but pretty strong. What can I do? I've got more ibex mounts coming and don't relish the idea of my hunting lodge smelling this way forever.
Regards,
Philip

Not going to,,,Try free breeze it, It wasn't tanned right if it smells. Home tan or something else It was not commercially tanned correctly. That is why I use the same commercial tannery I have used for 37 years now. New tanneries pop up all the time lots of supply companies selling in shop tanning kits and creams. Nothing beats professional tannery that has been around for a LONG time.

Dennis,

Thanks for your note. This was done but one of the top taxidermists in Texas. It looks great but.... I suppose I'll try to febreeze it. It can't hurt. Is there something specific I should ask the tannery/taxidermist to do?

I've just found most goat taxidermy smells. Many of the ibex, especially full mounts, at SCI smell fairly strongly.

Regards,
Philip

Put some "Cowboy Magic" shiner and conditioner on it, rub thru with fingers let dry and brush it helps also
Nothing to do more. Just the tannery and their methods , everyone has their own tan recipes. some better than others

What do you think Baking Soda do Dennis?

That would be okay sprinkled thru and vacuumed off, If you wanted to go that way use Carpet Fresh, It;s baking soda based your not going to get the smell out, now it's use a nice cover scent. Carpet fresh sprinkled on and coomded thru and either blown off with comprressed air or vacuum off with a brush end type vacuum hose.

I'm sorry, but I just have this vision of a nice Ibex mount with dandruff. Please forgive me for this.

Maybe one of the "Scent Killer" products sold for hunters. Even if it doesn't work, it should have no adverse effect. Kind of a "what have you got to lose" option.

Dennis
Is it the detangler and conditioner or the shampoo product? Sorry but there seems to be several cowboy magic products!

wiley,your all right.

I had the same issue with my ibex- skin was tanned at a commercial, top notch tannery but it still a slight "urine" smell after the tanning process. I shampooed the cape prior to mounting, let it dry out after mounting but still had a slight odor. I tried Frebreeze, followed by dusting with baking soda without much success. An old-timer taxidermist told me to sit it outside in the sunlight for brief periods at a time (usually direct sunshine on a mount is highly discouraged). That seemed to help and the old-timer claimed the sun's UA rays broke down the urine- not sure but it did have some positive effect I felt. I next tried a commercial taxidermy deodorizer- that had it's own particular smell. Not sure the urine smell wasn't better :( Long story short- although I did have some effect on reducing the odor, you probably don't catch a slight whiff until 3 ft away from it now, I haven't been able to fully eliminate it.
NOW FOR THE KICKER- despite all the effort, I'm still highly ALLERGIC to it and can't be in the same room with it, even hung 15 ft up and across the room, for over 30 min before my chest starts burning, throat gets scratchy and ears begin hurting as if I have an ear ache. It's one of my favorite animals and a 1/2 lifesize mount and I have to keep it in another room with the door closed !! It's been put away for 2 yrs now and every time I bring it back out thinking I'll be ok- I start reacting again !

I actually have slight allergies to several animals: bobcats, most of the goat species and most recently my mountain reedbuck, but I can usually put up with the "pain" to get through the mounting. After mounting, I'm usually Ok as long as I'm not physically touching the animals and have no issues with mounted cats in the same room with me. The ibex was the 1st time I experienced continued issues just being in the same room and not touching it. I have now found a similar but less extensive issue with my mnt reedbuck. My mom has a lot of allergies and she told me they get worse as you get older so I hope it doesn't become a bigger problem for me as I have over 60 mounts in my house : D

As a fellow taxidermist I hope I never develop any allergies as it would take a lot of enjoyment out of the work! Best of luck to you and your mounts.

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
