how much ammo?

howdy, first timer here targeting 5 animals in a pg safari with my .300 mag. How much ammo do you take? 50 enough?

That’s more than enough. You will need 2-4 check zero on arrival to camp. Few extra if need to adjust or rezero. For a 5 animal PG 30 is more than enough.

On both of my PG hunts in South Africa I took 60 rounds.

The first trip I shot 6 animals and brought home 40 rounds.

The second trip I shot 13 animals and brought home 40 rounds.

But you never know what might happen to your scope, rifle or something else where you will need to spend a number of rounds to get your rifle back onto target. Plus I was shooting reloads in a 340 Weatherby which isn't a very common round to find in South Africa.

Just remember you can always bring it home, or leave it with your PH/Outfitter instead of bringing it home

I took 60 .30-06 and 60 of .308. Came home with none.

I took a total of 9 shots with the .30-06 and 6 of .308

Sure hope my PH found it he mentioned he needed some.

Realistically 40 rounds should cover site in and at the outside chance you need to rezero.

40 rounds all soft of course for PG. With DG on license still 40 rounds with ratio of solids.

As noted already, you can bring unused ammunition home.
If you take 50 rounds you are certainly covered for eventualities.

A Pelican 1200 will hold 6 boxes of .300wm and be under the weight requirement. As others have said, leave the extra for your PH.

I would also recommend coming in with full ammo boxes...20, 40, 60, etc. There is nothing wrong with having 50 instead of 40 or 60 but I've seen some strange things when they count and the boxes aren't full. Sometimes it confuses them if the number doesn't match the amount on the box label. So think in terms of full boxes not partial.
