How many of you use QD rings

During a 21 day hunt in Zim, for the first 14 days, my scope never left my rifle. I don't recall a single incidence that I even considered it.
When we traveled to our Buff concession, about 45 minutes into our 1st morning, our trackers spotted 3 Dugga boys approx 200 yards off in the tall grass.
My PH (Harry Bennie) said:
"We're going to do this up close and personal...you won't need your riflescope...if you're more comfortable with it, make certain it is tuned to it's lowest power...but if we make this happen you will be shooting from 100 ft or so"
I flipped the levers, slid the scope off, and dropped it on the seat.
In this day of precision engineering, and the absolute unfailing ability of (quality) QD mounts to faithfully and religiously return your optics to exact zero, I cannot imagine why one would not afford themselves the option of deferring to express sights as circumstances dictate.
Respectfully...IMHO.

I use them on any rifle that has open sights.... just in case....

1. Qd rings or no on DG rifle?
2. If yes, which ones do you all like?
3. How often are you really removing your scope? I assume it would be on tracking and follow-up shots post the first shot?

1. Yes, must have, not only on DG rifle, but also on all my hunting rifles

2. I Dont have favorite. But (arguably) german swing mount provides fastest removal. One lever to operate in single move, as opposed to two screws on average set up on front and rear ring

3. I hunted only one buffalo so far. Follow up shots done with scope.
I took my rifle twice on safari so far.
But I remove scope every time when flying by airplane i keep it in cabin luggage.

Other rifles: if I am invited as a guest to driven hunt, QD mounts are back up. I might be driving 200 miles for such a hunt on invitation, or go by ferry to next island, and If there is a problem with scope, not having QD mounts, and iron sights would mean ruined hunt for me in case scope gets misaligned, or damaged.

All my traveling rifles have Talley QD mounts except my Buehler 404, which has Reto’s custom QD rings. On extended trips I have carried 2 scopes sighted for each rifle.

Never had a problem with these QD mounts, though they can be a bit fussy when first installing them.

I think all my rifles have QD rings. Claws, Smithson, Recknagel, Talley, Blasers.

I travel with them off and put them on when get to hunting camp. Only had one time the scope was off more than 1/2-3/4. And that was some blasers where I was off about 2” at 100. Never figured out why, it was only 1 time.

Always, on every kind of rifle.

I like the best ones I can afford that will not interfere with a low scope mount. Brands include Talley, EAW, German Claw, G&H side mounts, etc.

I remove the scope every single time I put a rifle in its case. I never, ever let an airline handle a gun with a scope attached. I've watched baggage handlers throw rifle cases from the plane onto the tarmac concrete.

If you play stupid games, you'll always win stupid prizes.

I do not with the exception of the R8. I’ve had too much trouble with them and they are never needed.
Don’t be afraid to try different things and see what works for you.

I use QD rings on all of my regular scope rifles. Even the rifles without iron sights and my 22 Hornet that primarily has the thermal scope mounted on it. However, the thermal scope doesn't have a QD mount. Once the scopes are zeroed they can be removed or replaced still maintaining the zero.

I use Talley and Leupold low, medium, and high mount QD rings depending on scope and rifle combination.

I prefer QD rings just in case something happens to my scope while hunting or I want to just switch scopes from one rifle to another.

I use QD mounts on almost all of my rifles. Mostly Talley, but the Rigby has EAW and the No 1’s have Warne. I tend to ghost rings as backup sights and find them excellent to 200.

As to DG, I have been on two follow-ups that come immediately to mind. The QD mounts came in handy.

I have Talleys on my 416 but have never had to remove my scope but if I had to follow up a wounded leopard in the dark I sure don't want to do it with a scope.

I have QD mounts on all my rifles that also have iron sights, which is nearly all of them. The exception is some varmint / target rifles.
I like the elegant and expensive Recknagel / EAW pivot mounts the best, and Suhler claw mounts on classic German drillings and BBF. The discontinued Leupold QR have worked OK for me on several rifles. The old Sako system of ring mounts direct on their tapered reciever dovetails do a good job too. I use Talleys on CZ/Brno rifles with 19mm dovetailed receivers. The only system I really don't like is any version of Weaver / Picatinny mounts. I find them Ugly & cheaply made. They are popular though, and serve a "good enough" purpose on cheap firearms.
A good European repeatable mount, with a scope that is attached via rail instead of rings is the ultimate hunting rifle scope mount system in my opinion.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
