So I have bought a rifle from H&H a 500/465 from 1940
It was made for the Army & Navy store. The Glasgow university hold the ledgers for A&N. I have asked them but It should be a extra serial number from A&N so they can find it in their ledgers. I cant find it on the rifle. The only serial number that is not from H&H (32081) is inside the locks - see photo 3. Is that a serial number from Joseph Brazier the locksmith ? I have never seen Joseph put a serial number inside the lock before but maybe he did that ?

I have found this rifle on Morphy also sold by army & navy and only 7 digits from mine. This one had a extra serial number on the tang mine does not, My holds H&H serial number on the tang.

A&N used bulk buy to get a better price from different makers

Also can someone help me read the lines from the ledger - most I can see but not all.

Any help I could get would be great to sort out the first owner of this rifle.

On the Northwood page whats the numbers under Bond St ? Obviously 32081 the sn from H&H but in the beginning of that line ?

It’s 465. Note they don’t mention .465 elsewhere on the sheet, but do mention the 480gr bullet.

although I can’t figure out what’s between 465 and 32081??

Anton, this is what I read:

465 xxxxx 32081 stock
Finally shot with 480 gr ctg
Sights adjusted for 1,2 & 300 yds
With two silver-capped projectiles (?)
All sights finished & blackened
Extra foresight will come to you
From factory
Not sufficient ctgs at range
To make diagram for this rifle

Rifle sent to factory

A B/O 465 DB Royal
H’less (hammerless) Ejector Rifle
24” Barrel
Pistol hand stock, xxx xxx (cap base?)
Cheekpiece
Hand detachable locks

Thanks BAxter see it now :LOL:

On the second page top corner 27/189 ? What is that you think ?

Good question... is it the 27th rifle of 189 they built that year?

is it the 27th rifle of an order of 189 for A&N??

It would be interesting to see other ledger pages.

Is that word after the 465 and before 32081 something to indicate that ALL numbers will be 32081, meaning for this rifle they just used the single S/N?

And I'm learning something about A&N here as I did not think makers made "their" rifles to be sold under the A&N label? I always thought the rifles were always marked Army & Navy but the maker did not mark them, and that's how they could buy in quantity.

Interesting H&H would make a rifle for a Maharajah, but sell it through A&N? Or were they just their importer on the far end?

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
