Hey I don’t know the person selling this it’s on Florida gun trader in the panhandle for area

They say hammer side lock h&h s# 868X
Supposed to be manufactured in 1881-1882
They have it listed 17995$

I have no idea if that a good price or not
They say it doesn’t appear to be used much.

Like I said I don’t know the person or have anything to do with it
I saw it and thought some one might be interested in it
That it might be something someone here would be looking for

Does it lock up tight? Is it on face? do the barrels ring? condition of barrels is everything...... it could be worth close to that if the conditions is right

Most likely the same maker as my Scott hammer 10 gauge. But since mine says Scott not H&H. I bought it for less than 1/10th that price.

It is quite possible that the gun was actually made by Scott or Webley and retailed by H&H. $18k is a high price for a shotgun, even if marked H&H.

For $18k I would more inclined to be in the Scottish round body search

That Mortimer is a very nice little rifle! Love the round body on it. Which rook round is it chambered for?

Without more to go on, I would definitely say the price is way too high. As others have mentioned, this is probably a W&C Scott made gun. Not many 20 bores were built back then and most were built for children or women. Check to see if this was originally a double rifle bored out to a shotgun, LOP, condition, etc.

I'm unaware of any H&H hammergun in the 1880 era ever having sold for $18,000. Maybe there is one owned by Czar Nicholas or George VI, but I'd say it is almost certainly is not worth that amount of money.

I'd have to check, I don't think Holland & Holland existed in 1881, I think Harris Holland had not yet partnered with his nephew. Add to that, I don't believe H&H had their own gun works until the 1890s, so with great certainty the gun in question was made in Birmingham by the trade.

For comparison, I had a Boss 12 bore, 100% restored to as new, hammergun, perfect case colors, original stock, perfect damascus barrels, oak and leather case. A truly flawless example that was engraved by Sumner. I think that sold for around $9000 ten years ago. A Boss is worth a lot more than a Holland for what its worth.

Dave it’s in.297/.250. Rook.

Rookhawk is assisting in dies, brass etc.

Oh you’d be surprised what some of the H&H shotty's go for. I’ve seen some sell for $80k! Crazy! This one the OP has is not an H&H, but still a beautiful gun. IMHO it’s easily a $2500+ gun. There are a lot of great old guns coming out of England right now due to some changes to their ammo laws (or so I’ve been told). I just picked up an 1883 W. Moore under lock hammer gun, love it!

I have both H&H and a Rigby rook rifle. Both very nice. But neither hold a candle to a little known Scottish maker Rook I have.

Can I ask what you determine as being a “finer” rifle tban another? I hear it thrown around a lot but I don’t often hear what makes the little known ones like that better. More accurate? Engraving you like better?higher checkering TPI or less mistakes in checkering? I’m not very well educated on what to look for outside of tight lockup and functionality

I’m a newby to this genre. But I read alot and ask questions. Finer can be subjective.

But what I personally meant was. Difficultly in design. More upgrades, the internal action

A pre-1898 H&H is not going to fetch $80k. A best royal #2 from between the wars with long stock, mint condition, in a subgauge Yes.

A hammergun unless a live pigeon gun is always a bargain firearm. They just don't command big money. Very rarely 5-figures.

I have no idea what it’s worth or anything else
I saw a h&h up for sale and just thought I would let the fourm know.
That’s it I have nothing to do with it at all.
Just like the 9.3x72 o/u that I put up a long time back.

it was a general response to a general statement that he thought that was a high price for a shotgun. as you noted, there are shotguns out there that fetch quite a bit of money

Flbt, Thanks for posting. It has certainly recieved interesting comments.

The shotgun is merely a 2nd class, black powder hammer gun that isn't in pristine condition that was retailed by H&H..
