Normally I reply to threads .... Today I need information if anyone can help . I have a client and friend going to Canada on wolf hunt .... I talked to the outfitter this morning that seems not very clued up on. What to do .... He also has a 30-06 thatwas bought with the hunt that needs to come backat theend of the hunt ... Can anybody give me info regarding e importation of that rifle into. The USA and what is needed ... All help would be appreciated very much !!

Where is the final destination for the firearm?

He is taking a 270 to Canada which has to come back with the 30-06 which is currently in Canada. So final destination on the new import PHX , USA .

He will need a export license from Canada for the 30-06. And probably something to bring it into the US

Suffice to say it does not appear to be simple.

Also, most firearms purchases go the other way. US to Canada.

It generally takes the Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch (FEIB) personnel approximately four-to-six weeks to process a properly completed ATF Form 6. To assist us with the timely processing of your forms, we ask that you ensure:

The Import Permit form from the ATF:

Some of the instructions:

Import Firearms, Ammunition, and Implements of War | ATF

Then another form 6A has to be sent in and processed. Then all presented at the port of entry.

Canadian Federal Export Permit Information.

Applying for an Export Permit for Firearms, Related Goods and Ammunition

Obviously I have not done this process personally. Perhaps someone has.
These are the sources for the information.

Wish him luck.

Brickburn , thanks for the help . I research a little . Hope someone has gone through this.

I am not 100% on bringing a gun in from the US. Permanently exporting one out of Canada is a bigger issue, temporary exports are much easier. The form is the same on the Canadian side with the exception of 1 box (permanent export) and I believe you need a gun broker in the US to charge you $120 for 5 minutes of paperwork in addition to the ATF form for permanent import of a firearm.
