Getting mixed answers on bringing ammo into South Africa

The OP’s question is one of the reasons I use Shawn Kennedy of Gracy Travel. I recently traveled through JNB on my way to Zimbabwe. I took my 375 & 416, with ammo for each, BUT I also took some 12 gauge ammo withbringing a shotgun. I asked Shawn if this was allowed and she told me that as long as the ammo was listed on a 4457, I could get it on mySAPS form and bring it. So when I sent to get updated 4457’s for my guns, I also had one for the ammo I was taking. It included the shotgun shells. That was all documented on my SAPS and I sailed through Jo’burg with no issues whatsoever. Bruce from Gracy Travel sheparded me through the airport process and everything went smoothly. Very smoothly.

Although I’ve never heard of anyone getting in trouble by taking ammo in their checked luggage without a rifle. I wouldn’t risk it. Just tip the gun owner on that side.

Update:
It all went very easily. Lufthansa included the ammunition as part of the sporting firearm equipment fee, which after it was all done was a good bit less than any extra baggage fees would have been. We did bring some excess back, no other fees or issues.
Lufthansa DID ASK if we had secured the German Transit Permit when departing LAX, but did not ask to inspect it. Neither did anyone in Frankfurt.
Interestingly, I actually saw the two rifle cases being loaded onto the change-over plane in frankfurt. Two large, red stripes on the cases made it easy to spot from the terminal viewing area. Also helped that ALL luggage, carry-on, etc. had electronic tracking devices that I could view their progress on. Peace of mind.

I'm going to SA in September and will be using the PH'S rifles and ammo. I've heard that ammo can be difficult to get there, so I'm wanting to bring a couple boxes of ammo to help replenish what I use. Some say that I can, others say no ammo alone, but only with a firearm. Any info on that?
Ammo is very easy to get in SA. Tell your PH what you need. You can even buy it yourself if you bring a gun and have a temporary import certificate.
