A couple of Sundays ago I was at my local Bass Pro looking through their used gun rack. I hadn’t been there for several months and wasn’t looking for anything in particular. I found this used/like new Ruger M77 Hawkeye African .375 Ruger for $1k. I quietly left and came back Monday when they had their ten percent off sale (plus five percent off for active/retired mil/le). It was still there. I asked the gun counter guy WHY this hadn’t sold yet. He looked it up on his computer and found no record of it in their inventory, which means it never made it onto Cabela’s nationwide Gun Library listings. He told me they had received 1500 used firearms over three days and had no way of inventoring all of them quickly. I found no evidence it had ever been shot. Sometimes better lucky than good. LOL

Great Score. Well done. (y)

Did it come with the thead protector / cap for when you take the brake off?

When Ruger manufactured a run of the Hawkeye Alaskan, African and Guide Gun models awhile back in .375 and .416 Ruger they were all over Gun Broker and other sites. I checked recently and they’re now mostly MIA except for several dozen new LH Guide Guns in .375 on GB. No .416s. Strange. I guess the run ran out so to speak. LOL

No, I’ll have to buy one from Ruger. I think they’re $20. Why would the previous owner have put the rings on but doesn’t appear to have mounted a scope in them? Or even shot the rifle with open sights? I don’t get it.

A small price to pay.

Great find, and a fine looking rifle!

This could turn into a long running thread of bargain finds at Bass Pro / Cabelas stores. I could probably post 3 or 4 myself, just from the last year. You have to wade through a lot of listings on a regular basis, but the steals do pop up on occasion. Their organizational challenges play to our benefit from time to time.

After snagging a custom model 70 classic 375 h&h last year for about $1,000 I try to look a few times a week. I do get frustrated though, something will go on clearance and get snagged before I get the chance.

Agreed; I wish that their website allowed you to filter their used firearms view by what's on clearance.

Great find, glad it worked out for you and do hope it shoots to your liking!

Yes, but now I'm wondering how many firearms at each individual Cabelas/Bass Pro never make it onto their inventory and/or are in the stores for awhile before hitting their nationwide Gun Library?

I might have to stop in Cabela's down in Lonetree when I'm down that way.

I haven't been in a Cabela's since February 2022

A pretty good percentage of the deals I've scored at my local Cabelas/Bass Pro were not listed online, and my guess is that happens all over the country on a regular basis. One of these days I intend to ask the guys at my local Bass Pro (whom I've kind of become friends with) to help me understand why some guns show up on the online catalog and others don't; and also why i often see some listings stay active for long after the gun has sold.
