I will be flying from the east coast to the Rockies next week, I would like to take along one of my handguns for bear protection,
What I do not want to do is check 3 bags. I have a hard side lockable pistol case. Can I declare the case like normal Then put the locked case inside of a hard suitcase with clothing and check it?
I will be flying out delta, coming back won’t be an issue. I will have a long gun and case I can put it in.

Yes, the locked handgun case can go inside your regular suitcase when you’re declaring it. I’ve done this both ways. I have a large pelican handgun case that fits multiple scoped handguns and have checked it without putting it inside a larger suitcase, because it’s a bit too large to do so, a couple times. It came through very beat up. It comes right through with the regular baggage so be ready to grab it! If only taking one or two non scoped pistols I have a smaller case that fits easily within my other regular checked bag. This way feels a bit more comfortable as it’s not obvious to any would be thieves when it rolls out the conveyor belt at baggage claim. A large rifle case would of course go to the oversize claim area which is yet more secure.

No problems within the US

Yes

The only drawback is you must go to the counter. No curbside or printing a tag at the Kiosk. You’re in the line with every sad sack, problem child and handicapped people.

This winter flying out of Detroit, before the Government shutdown. No weather issues, got in line at 4:00 2.5 hours before our flight. No one working at the counter. Finally at 5:00 AM 1 employee shows up.

With my handgun. I’m forced to be in the line with anyone with issues. Every one in front of me seemed to be working on their doctorate dissertation, it took that long. 3 others and we missed our flights and had to re book. Luckily we got out 3 hours later.

But, if we were able to check our bag at the curb or print our own baggage tags at the kiosk, we would’ve had no issues. So just know you have to go to the counter which means the problem child line.

The only thing I would add, is allow an extra hour when checking in a firearm. Not every airline employee can check a firearm and a manager must oversee the procedure. Then the bag must be cleared by TSA before you head to security. Just lots of places that can get slowed down if they are busy. Good luck and be safe.

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
