Hi
I from South Africa, heading to the US to participate in a rifle shooting competition in Texas, flying in via Las Vegas. I have my temporary import permit for the rifle for the US, so all is legal. My concern is when I am flying back out to South Africa. I am flying out from Nashville, so checking all my luggage and rifle in there. The flight from Nashville goes to JFK, where I have an overnight layover of about 10 hours, before flying to London from there and South Africa from there. A lot of flight time I know, but it is booked and I can't change it.

My question / concern is regarding the layover at JFK. I am hoping that because it is an international connecting flight, my rifle will be checked right through from Nashville to South Africa, so I will not touch it at JFK.
I am staying in the same terminal, and will not try to go into NYC to sleep there or sight see as I do not want to risk having to claim and check my bags with my rifle again.

Do you think I will have any problems there at JFK?

Also, if a firearm is checked through, do they open and inspect it all over again there after they already inspected it at Nashville when it gets checked in there?

Any time I have flown thru New York. I had another inspection.

you better check with the airline but I do not believe JFK will inspect it since you will not be touching it but London could be a problem, check your airline. who are you flying with?

Out of curiosity, what type of match?
I know south Africa is strong in F-class shooting.

So I am not a lawyer but I do live in New Jersey and have flown out of JFK with a gun. 1). I would check with the airline. If it is checked all the way though, great and you will not have to touch it. 2) bring no ammunition back. If you do, separate locked case. 3) if you do have to take possession of your gun ask the airline when is the earliest you can check it in, ie pick it up and go straight to the counter to check in. 4) if you do have to collect the gun, do not take any public transportation including any train at the airport, take a taxi to the hotel if you cannot walk to it. 5) straight to hotel room with the gun and straight to the check in with gun. Do not stop anywhere including a bathroom. I know stupid but this is New York City. I think we invented stupid sometimes.

Edit: Yes what type of gun do you have? Problem guns are semi automatic high capacity. Any silencers, big no no. 50 caliber? There are guns and then there are mean nasty looking deadly guns in the eyes of nyc.

6mm Dasher bolt action rifle.

I think there is a 48 or 72 hour no permit rule in NYC for transiting with "legal" long guns. I'd check to be sure.

+1 to MMAL advice. I live in NY and the cops have always told me to call ahead and coordinate with airline. Do not touch the rifle, I am told, if it pops up on the baggage carousel by mistake. Get a cop. Double check everything. NYC is a messed up place and the cops seem to love hassling law-abiding citizens who own guns.

I am in the process of getting one built. Should be ready end of February.

What is your load?
31.8gr Varget, 105gr Berger Hybrid Target. 2870fps.

Those 105gr hybrids almost always group in a Dasher at 2820 - 2900fps.

Cool.
I am going to be using the 105gr Berger VLD hunting bullet. My targets will be prairie dogs. I'll try Varget with it, have 20 lbs or so in stock.

6mm Dasher bolt action rifle.

a bolt action long rifle that can only hold 3-5 cartridges is the best bet. Good luck with the shoot.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
