This thread may be in the wrong forumn. If it is admins please move this. I am new to this forumn and still learning to navigate it.

I made a post looking for recommendations of outfitter to book a safari to celebrate my first anniversary with my wife on. The animals that are priority is Kudu 1st, Sable 2nd, then zebra and oryx and possibly add others. I had over 30 outfitters reach out and got very overwhelmed. I ended up continuing talking with 4-5 different ones and I know there were a ton of extremely reputable places that I spoke with. My wife and I ended up narrowing it down to these 3 outfitters: JKO, LJ, and Limpopo North Safaris. These 3 just were the closest to our budget and seemed to offer what we were looking for.

Jacque with JKO was great to talk to. We are interested in going to his Free State location. It looked to be a beautiful lodge, said they have great meals, great staff, very accommodating offering night hunting for critters and varmint animals. The only con I see was this place was further from a lot of non hunting activities which my wife and I do want to do some of too. Also he did say the kudu in this area aren’t huge, but thinks we can get a 50ish inch kudu. He did say we can arrange pilanesberg park, but will require more traveling. Really loved talking with Jacque and he did have several references.

Sampie with Limpopo North was also great to talk to. We initially talked about one location that was a little cheaper, but was further from some non hunting activities so he said we could do his Limpopo area and do pilanesberg as well as other non hunting things. He said in that area it will be the greater kudu and does think we can get a bigger kudu 52”+ and great sable as well. I did like the way his first lodge looked better than the Limpopo lodge, but both were nice. I’m not sure how much time my wife and I would actually spend in the room anyway. He also can offer 12 month financing at 0 percent interest.

Juan with LJ safaris was one of the first to message me and awesome to talk to. He was very helpful and honest and has remained that way in communicating. He offered us a safari and from there a trip to Capetown for a couple days, which my wife loved that idea. He’s been great talking with and if I don’t book with him this trip I’d love to in the future! Only con I saw was obviously the cape kudu do tend to be smaller and we would have to hunt kudu on a separate concession instead of hunting where we would be staying.

Others that were awesome to talk with but we just ended up either slowly losing contact or decided not to go with for some other reason we’re: Derian Koekemoer (awesome guy, but my wife doesn’t want to do malaria shots, and they don’t have gemsbok to hunt on the place we talked about. Kemp safaris, honestly Kemp was great and place was beautiful, just the sliding scale trophy fee kind of turned me off, but I totally understand. Spear, I didn’t get to talk to much, but he clearly runs a reputable place with lots of references! Daryl with Mount Carmel, I met him at the sportsman show in the states and we clicked, but just little more expensive for what I wanted then some others. Limcroma, they were awesome, but more expensive for less trophies and said it would be a camp full, which for a anniversary trip we would rather be more personable!

Help me pick between the few I’m torn on. Any references or testimonials would be great! We want to be safe, comfortable, have fun, and obviously get great trophies, and be treated fairly! It’s a 1st anniversary trip so I do want it to be nice and my wife enjoy herself and be treated amazingly!

Thanks in advance!

I have not hunted with these 3 outfitters but I do wish you great success picking out the right outfitter for you and your wife!! Kudu hunting is addictive!!

It does not seem that you have asked about the acreage you will be Hunting as part of your criteria for deciding. Did you want to hunt small acreage for known trophies or did you want more of a natural experience on large acreage? The bigger and better outfitters simply are going to have more acreage. You especially want to ask this question in Limpopo.

WE ARE REPEAT CLIENTS OF JKO, BUT HAVE NOT HUNTED WITH THE OTHER TWO.

Whichever makes you feel the most comfortable. I try to support the younger guys myself. Best bang-for-the-buck or whichever caters to your preferred style of hunt.

I think eastern cape provides the best experience of the 3 different regions you listed. I’d choose LJ because of that. They also have the ability to show you two very different areas the Karoo and the coast. I’d make sure you add a bushbuck to your list if you hunt eastern cape. How many days are you planning to hunt?

I've not hunted with any of these three outfitters on my 4 trips over but I'm sure that all will provide a great experience for you. I agree that for your 1st anniversary you want to go to a camp where you and your wife will have the place to yourselves, that is the way my wife prefers it when she goes with me. Of the three mentioned I think I would lean toward LJ and the Eastern Cape, the side trip to Cape Town will be a nice addition for your wife and you also have Addo Elephant Park in the EC which may be close enough for a non-hunting day or half day. I wouldn't worry too much about the size of the kudu hunted on this first trip. Cape kudu are smaller anyway than the southern greater kudu you get up in Limpopo or NW Province. Take a nice Cape kudu this trip, you will be hooked on Africa I'm sure after your first trip. Then go back in a couple of years and hunt Botswana (lowest priced kudu trophy fees in my experience) or somewhere up in the Kalahari or Limpopo area of South Africa during the kudu rut in May and you should easily get a bruiser Kudu over 55"+. Hope you have a great trip

I can’t help with narrowing the outfitters - but if you are spending time in Cape Town or the western cape wine region - I am happy to give recommendations based on my experience.

September is peak season for southern right whale watching - something to consider if that is of interest to you or your wife.

Thanks everyone for the replies! We are trying to book something for the first part of September THIS year, for our first anniversary, so I know as far as safari planning, it’s last minute. I think like ya’ll all said we will enjoy ourselves with any of the mentioned places! We just want to make the right choice.

@Dylancadby23 I would go to Botswana with @NKWE SAFARIS or Tholo Safaris. The ranches are much larger and the kudu are huge. Gemsbok there and lots of other game. Prices are reasonable. You can do some non-hunting activities from Maun in the Okavango Delta or take a tour through Chobe National Park or Moremi Game Reserve. Maun is one of the safest and cleanest towns in Africa. Lots of ex-pats there. Good restaurants and things to see. Can take a helicopter flight over the delta and/or Jaco can take you tiger fishing. There are several reports here on AH with Jaco at @NKWE SAFARIS. Travel to Maun in Botswana is easy. Lots of elephants nearby in and around the delta as well as lions and the rest of the Big 5.

One thing I would add, I wouldn’t treat this as a once in a lifetime trip.

We went to South Africa and expected it would be our only trip there. We have been back 3 times since. If you treat this as your first trip instead of the only trip you may find less urgency in doing everything and it will likely be a more enjoyable and potentially affordable trip.

Jacques is a good guy. You won’t go wrong with @JKO HUNTING SAFARIS@PHOENIX PHIL is the US rep if you would like to chat with an American before making a final decision.. he’s a good guy and a straight shooter…

You need to call Bennie Osmer at klipveld lodge. He can make it happen. JKO seems to be mentioned a lot. I am not familiar with the other 2.

I hunted with Juan and Lauren of LJ for my first trip last year. They are fantastic people and you will be made to feel like family. My brother in law and I hunted both the Karoo (75,000 acres parcel) and the coastal area on smaller parcels including their own farm.

They and their trackers will work very hard for you.

If kudu is your main goal, then I agree with looking at Nkwe.
I got back 2 weeks ago and was blessed with shooting 3 kudu, all measured at least 57". Huge hunting areas, most low fence and quality/ age of animals is top notch. No sliding scale. Bots is safe and full of friendly folks. His new camp should be done soon and it borders the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Nkwe is worth a look.

I’m jumping in to agree that @NKWE SAFARIS should be a considered. Went in March took 3 kudu 54-56 and the hunt was better then expected. HUGE property with tons of game. Botswana and the people were great

I didn’t specifically call out NKWE in my previous post but that is who I hunted with in 2024 and what I meant about going to Botswana for a big kudu on your second trip since you’ve already narrowed down to the three you mentioned. I got a 58” at NKWE last year and one of my hunting buddies as shot two there over 60”

I have hunted twice with Jacques and have nothing but great things to say about him. Top notch hunting and accommodations. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

You might look at Africa Hunt Lodge. Reasonable prices and the Kudu Valley Safari Lodge is spectacular. They have and can arrange a number of side excursions. Talk with Aaron, he’s really easy to deal with and a very nice guy.

Most of my hunts are solo — just me, my rifle, and a good map. Sometimes I tag along with an old buddy for a week in Zimbabwe or South Africa, but more often than not, it’s just me.
Big fan of classic hunting — bolt-action rifles, old-school tracking, and taking the time to really be in the moment.
Just did a podcast, check it out if interested!
