Ignorance and fear are a combination that supports many phobias and anxieties.

• Anxiety and the unknown.
• Inability to read a map/globe and understand geography,
• Failure to differentiate/understand disease transmission and vectors,
• xenophobia,
• etc.

As an example:
The nurses in Dallas Texas (2014) that contracted EBOLA would have been in closer proximity to the fearful anywhere in the continental USA than those would be travelers landing in South Africa were to the Liberian EBOLA outbreak at the time.

Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluid, not a cough.

I just finished my 21 day quarantine yesterday, It was a weird experience going from Uganda to Rwanda and into Kenya for two weeks before flying home (rerouted to Atlanta for screening). I am too tired to write about it now but will in detail when my jet lag subsides…. And thankfully never got sick or had any symptoms

I happened to already there when the news hit, my phone started blowing up at 3 am stating the border to Rwanda was going to close, I didn’t want to be trapped so left and drove straight to the border arriving at 5 am and got through…. Stayed a week in Kigali isolated on a friends farm waiting to get to Kenya where I had remote work to do…. My wife was freaking out and my father hasn’t been that angry with me since high school days…. They think I am reckless which I probably am a bit.

Yeah it is, but truthfully Ebola is very survivable if treated accordingly, sadly most rural Congolese and Western Ugandans don’t trust doctors as well as do not have access to any healthcare .. pretty sad as they will trust anything but the truth.

lol…why do you think I am called Rare Breed, I am much the same but fortunately age has greatly reduced my “bull in a china shop syndrome.” Again just glad you are okay!!!

Don’t think it will, its seems to be loosing steam from my contacts in DRC. I am not planning on going back to Africa until September. Hopefully it has played out by then.

Ebola - compared to airborne viruses like flu or Covid - is pretty hard to catch. It requires direct contact with the body fluids of an infected person. One of the reasons it tends to spread among family members and healthcare workers in Third World environments and has difficulty gaining a foothold in developed societies.

Many years back I was planning a trip to Congo-Brazzaville & doing research on DRC as flights were cheaper into Kinshasa, well there had been a spate of killings/burnings/hangings of Cock Thief’s I thought seems extreme for stealing chickens but it seems it was Witch Doctors - sorcerers (or accused of) stealing “Penis’s” now this is completely ridiculous as no one’s was stolen but several or more people were killed for doing so !

Similar to pointing the Bone at Aboriginal people !

So it’s a bit scary when your a White guy in these places & ANY thing different, strange or bad happens you will get the blame !

That is so true, I once was driving from Jo burg to Mozambique at night, ran over something in the road and it thumped under the tires, Looking back it was a person that was hit earlier in the day and probably a hundred cars went over them.
