Hey, just got off the phone with defiance machine, so I’m all excited…
as you’re probably aware they are a premiere builder of actions, rem 700 footprint based, mostly seen in the LR communit (is my experience)
I don’t know how I never have seen this action, or “option“ for that matter, but they offer a crf “claw” option on some of their actions….
i spec’d a rebel action with their sheep hunter port, rem 700 long std bolt face, with a crf claw extractor…
now I’m learning…. So I don’t know if it’s a “true” controlled feed or if it is the type where the claw snaps over the rim when the cartridge is chambered…i assume the later, but not sure.

so does anyone have any experience with the crf option from defiance?
Did you know they even offered this?
I feel like it’s totally untapped mrkt to have a custom built rifle setup as a “DG” RIFLE (what I would consider dg) utilizing defiance machine action…maybe there is a reason for that…
no doubt using a historical Mauser or something with some ‘soul’ is definitely cool for packing around! The history in ones hand is something that can “touch your soul” & I understand why so many go this route…

but for conversation’s sake…
seems to me that the custom action world is significantly smaller when using crf actions.. in this safari world, or any world where “it matters,” crf is the thing to have!
enter the defiance action in crf…. It is no doubt quality! can be had with a wing style safety too…
…yes, it lacks the provenance as an “African” rifle, but I think that it will make a cool build!
Not to mention, the Remington footprint will allow for lots of stock options, Wyatt’s mag box extra length, & many quality trigger options too!
iam planning more of a ligher Weight go anywhere kind of outfit probably a 9.3x62…alternative knowing me…might end up as a 400 Whelen…something “eye-catching“

im curious to hear what people think about my excitement, hahaha, my wife can’t stand me “chatting“ about it…x) so I thought Id talk to someone who might care x)

It does look essentially like a model 70 clone. As best as I can tell it does not have the unique Mauser undercut on the bolt head with the matching foot on the extractor.

I have heard good things about them - I’d love to have one in my hands.

Griffen and Howe are making an Africa-inspired rifle with the guys from Field Ethos. Nice looking rifle.

yes I do think it is basically a claw extractor….
not true crf (I think is what I mean, hahaha)
also I found out dakota is operating again under the name “park west” however I don’t know if they’ll be selling components at all…

I think what a guy gains here is having so many options for parts after the action…I implicitly trust defiance and everything they do! Maybe not for everyone but an option nonetheless

Check out the Zermatt / Big Horn Origin CRF actions. I had a Defiance 700 clone and used it on one hunt, pulled the barrel and sold it. Too many design kerfuffles on a hunting action for me. YMMV.

I see you are in Idaho. You might take a look at BAT Machine in Post Falls.

Yes I’ve used some BAT stuff before. They are a respectable company for sure! Those I’ve been around were quite heavy actions. I wasn’t aware they made a crf action. Ill take a look, zermatt too

If you're looking for a Rem 700-ish CRF, have you seen/considered the Mausingfield?

Unlike the Defiance it was designed as a CRF from the get-go using a combo of Mauser 98 and Springfield 1903 features.

I had forgotten about law.…had such a bad experience with a law rifle…then heard they went out of business. I didn’t know they claim/are ‘controlled round feed’..I thought they were the prototypical 700 clone only with a m16 (as I remember) extractor. So they must be using the post64 win marketing of a ‘controlled feed push feed’…
ya know I basicallh only ever consider the claw to be a ”crf”…that is a mistake I guess… that law action is tempting just based on price….although I’m still (for thought experimenting) still leaning towards defiance for my mass market do anything rifle I am looking forward to trying it! I may go a different route (caliber) on it if I see a better option.
the zermatt origin is also priced nice and I’ve heard good about the company. I never liked the shape of the action, the floating bolt is a nice feature… I handled a proof element that used their action and it was certainly functiona, I just never got a smile while messing with it…

AFAIK, Mausingfield is out of business.

I know nothing about crf and claws, etc, but I recognise good grammar, punctuation and careful writing. Refreshing!

Another option:

Wife and I were looking at a M704 for her a few years back. I met up with them at on of the outdoor shows a few years before they went out of business, really nice guys. Liked their action, but decided to go in a different direction.

I have handled their CRF action, in my non-expert opinion, it seems to be a M70 clone. It is full length claw with a fixed blade. If building a rifle for DG, I would almost certainly look at a Mausingfield action, but I would have to figure out a way to not use a rail for mounting optics. Their rail system is great, but it's not what I would want for that use.

Looks like a CRF to me. There are so many guys with really advanced machining capabilities here in the US it makes a guys head spin. There is literally one in every isle at SHOT. All stems from long range competition shooting

I have a custom 300 RUM built on a Defiance Deviant CRF action. They are a Mauser style action with a full length extractor. I opted for the three position safety so it would be similar to the Winchester 70’s that I shoot.
