CZ550 Production ceasing?

i overheard a Winchester Rep in a store telling the proprietor they were clearing th the .308 CZ550s. This was due to it being discontinued due to high production costs. I heard that for myself but was not in the conversation.
Does this mean they are discontinuing all CZ550’s??? Safari Magnums?

I’d hope not but as I say the first part was from aWinchester Rep in Australia, I don’t have the full story.

I hope it is not true. I have 2 CZ 550,s fantastic no nonsence rifles with superb out of the box accuracy. Both mine (243 and 30-06) I have had for about 16 years never a problem.

Few years ago, when they launched 557 line, I have read one of their press releases stating something like that "they have modernised" production line, and started 557 line. (I think the new production is based on CNC technology).
However , they stated - that they will keep 550 production line for tropical calibers.
But this was few years ago, and things change.

It would be shame if they stopped.
CZ 550 is one of most affordable Mauser 98 platforms, today.

The 550 Medium has been discontinued for a few years and replaced by the push feed 557. That was in the following chamberings: .243, .308, 6.5X55, .270, 30-06, and 9.3X62. The 550 Magnum (375 and up) length action is still in production.

As far as I know, Triple River Gunsmiths (the official CZ USA custom shop) has the last lot of 550 Medium actions for custom rifles.

Reviving a thread here because @IvW mentioned something about CZ discontinuing production of the 550 Safari action.
Seeing as I have one for sale in the classifieds...I'm looking for a little insight.
Anyone have any new word?

This is indeed correct based on information I received that I deem reliable. I have indicated this in a few CZ 550 related threads over the last few months, and I am not surprised to see it starting to be circulated.

CZ is apparently redirecting investments toward the handgun market.

I was told that the last CZ 550 medium length and magnum length actions are at Triple River for custom builds. Whatever factory CZ 550 in .500 Jeff are out there are it, there will be no more, and apparently the .375, .458 and .416 are soon out of factory production as soon as the stock of parts & barrels for them are finished.

This is sad, because aside from the mega $$$ Original Mauser, Granite Mountain, etc. the 550 is the ONLY affordable, magnum length, double square bridge, "Mauser" action available. Good luck building a .416 Rigby on a Win 70 action...

Oh, you will miss yours BeeMaa but if you wait a bit I see a clear 'supply & demand' effect coming to increase its resale value although maybe not fast enough to fund your R8

Thank you for the information.
However I will tell you that I'm not selling the CZ to fund the R8, as that would be dealing from a position of weakness.
I'm selling because I will be duplicating the purpose of the CZ with the R8.
As a matter of fact I'm considering pulling my ad based on this and waiting until the hammer really comes down.
Better act quick or that $500 loss you have me pegged for could turn into a lot more.

You already have it, so downgrade your car to pay for the Blaser. Everything doesn’t have to be practical.

If this is true ,then this means that the model 70 rifle from Winchester will be now be leading in sales for the " off-the-shelf" large game calibre rifles in the market . As l understand it , the model 550 from CZ and the model 70 from Winchester were the two most popular non custom rifles for the International hunting market .
When , l checked Winchester's internet site today , l saw that the only big game calibres which the model 70 is made in , are :
.375 Holland and Holland magnum
.458 Winchester magnum
.416 Remington magnum ( which l have no experience with ) .
I wonder if the popularity of other large game calibres ( used predominantly by CZ ) may wane , in popularity as a result , . In the future , l foresee a rise in sales of the already popular model 70 .

I think some are missing the point. Discontinuance is a sign of slackening sales and demographics are rock solid against any resurgence of big bore rifles prices. A previous post stated CZ was concentrating on handguns and from what I see at two gun clubs, the pistol ranges have ten times the use as the rifle. At the public indoor ranges, one needs to only go there one time to see why the handgun market is on fire.

or they are announcing their bankruptcy. I’m not really trying to be malicious. They just promised me something they couldn’t deliver. In all honesty, I was asking for some customization to their pattern. When I finally reached someone who could tell me that they couldn’t make it, it was clearly because they order parts and put them together. My request was to make those parts different which they cannot do. Makes a lot of sense, if you think of them as a mass produced rifle company....but then mass produced m70’s go for less money...

MRC seem like great M70 reproductions....might be more accurate machining...cast

M70’s are forged and proven albeit mass produced.

The thing that set the CZ550/BRNO 602 apart is the double square bridge with dovetail and indexing notch.
Add to that CRF and 5 rounds in the magazine...no one else offers this in a production rifle until you get to the Rigby price range.
Rigby...who by the way, used CZ550 actions in their bespoke rifles for years.

CZ has been the Toyota Land Cruiser of the African rifle world for more than 50 years.
If they stop production of the 550 due to cost, it will indeed be a loss of one of the great affordable rifles in DG calibers.
