Was finally able to take my new 458 to the woods today to try it out. I removed the factory stock and put on a Bell and Carlson I had for my 375.

First round was a light 400 grain load in a Winchester Magnum case. Kick was light, a bit lighter than the same load in my lighter Zastava 458. Second round was a factory 458 Lott Nosler 500 grain partition . Definitely recoiled a bit more, but wasn't too bad, at least off the sticks.

I them attached the razor 1-6 with Warne Qd mounts to the rifle and fired a bunch more. Razor seemed a good fit. Huge eye relief, nice eye box, the reticle seemed quite bold, it's a second focal plane so doesn't change size with the power being adjusted. Illumination is very nice, day time bright , and goes nice and low for near dark use.

Nosler loads chronied at 2230 fps . I think I fired off around 16 rounds this evening, will try some more tomorrow.

I did get a bit complacent with the recoil , held it a little light and it knocked my middle finger a tiny bit. Didn't really smart, but I have heard about this happening on bigger guns. Never had that issue with my 375's .

Was good fun. Hopefully I can take it with me on a return trip to Africa!

Will see if I can post a pic. I will look how to do it, seem to have forgot.

Nice report. I’ve only shot 10 rnds so far out of my CZ 550 Lott with the 500gr factory Noslers. Not much more recoil, if any , than shooting my CZ 550 .458WM with factory 450gr Barnes at 2240fps? But, ten rounds of the Lott and ten from my Whitworth .375 and that’s enough for me in one session. Standing using a sling for support and open sights at 50yds.

I have a bunch of Barnes 450 TSX , and some 500 and 450 grain swift I am looking forward to loading up.

I agree I didn't find much difference in recoil between my Zastava 458 Win and the heavier Cz in the 458 Lott.

From all I had read about both 458's I was worried about detached retinas, concussion, and a dislocated shoulder.

You know you are shooting a substantial round, but as long as you are hanging on a bit it can bring a heck of a smile to your face!

Yeah I was really worried about the Lott’s recoil from reading about it here? But, when I shot it, the Sky didn’t darken and the earth didn’t shake, so I shot it nine more times. Then I shot my .375 ten times. As always, felt recoil is subjective to an individual shooter? And, it did bring a smile to my face!

It's amazing what a difference a well fitting rifle stock can make.
Between that and technique, I'd say they are two of the biggest factors when it comes to felt recoil.

@machinistbutler, how did it group for you?

Dug some of the partitions out of the bank backstop. Mostly clay, some stones in it . Partitions looked good, will have to weigh them when I get home in a few days.

One of them looks very much like an Aframe, with the bulge . These 500 grain partitions apparently have heavier jackets and the partition is quite far forward compared to smaller caliber partitions.

Yesterday just was shooting over the chrony, and adjusting scope a bit. I set up a target today at 50 meters and shot a group I was happy with. Mosquitos were driving me nuts so I just shot the one 3 shot group off of sticks.

Looking forward to making some loads up for it, but I will be satisfied if I get the same accuracy off the sticks that the nosler factory rounds did.

Looks like a day well spent! I agree, that factory 500 g Nosler Ammo is very manageable. I was averaging just a hair over 2020 FPS in my 550, that might be why...

@Angelo_orygun was that 458 Winchester or Lott that you were just getting 2020 fps? I did chronograph one round just under 2200, the rest were between 2200 and 2280.

I misspoke slightly! Average over 5 rounds was 2082 FPS, ES of 27.
