Hi All

I am quite curious to hear some accounts of people hunting with a 357 magnum lever action.
What game did you go after and what was you experience?

Would be nice to know the distance of the shots if possible as well as the shot placement.

Excited to hear from you all.

The only game I’ve taken with a 357MAG were hogs when I was living in GA. I was using a revolver at the time and wouldn’t risk shots beyond 40 yards because those things were so tough. I wish I would’ve been using a lever action for the additional muzzle velocity and accuracy.

I was using 158 grain bullets (can’t remember the brand) and it typically took two to finish the job.

I have used a Marlin Trapper in 357 to kill some big wild hogs at less than 25 yards.

Using shoulder shots, it was a quick killer. I used Winchester STHPs.

They weighed 145 grains.

I have also used a 357 Revolver with a 4 inch barrel. It did not kill as quickly as the carbine and required a finishing shot.

A carbine really steps up the effectiveness of the 357 in my experience.

Biggest game I've shot with my carbine is beavers. Adults weigh about 50 lbs or so, at 50 yards the .357 with 158 gr. HP is very effective, anywhere in the chest.

Small feral pigs under 50 yards.

I also used it to dispatch injured cattle with clean results at 30 yards

Buffalo bore makes some hot 357 hunting ammo that at 100 yards has the same energy as a 30-30. It's what I used for hunting this year and that ammo was devestating on my giant buck.

That is quite interesting actually, I have taken a lot of guinea fowl and then an Impala as well at 70 meters and it was in instant kill to the heart, a HUGE ram.

Would love to see the buck you bagged.

I can not seem to find any place in South Africa that sells Buffalo bore (it sucks), I wonder if one would be able to get it through shipping in some manner.

I knew someone that bagged a Kudu with his Rossi with a lung shot as well, ran like 50 yards and then dropped.

I know the owner of Buffalo Bore (Tim Sundles) owns a ranch in South Africa and spends lots of time there; maybe you could reach out to him through by email/youtube and ask him about availability?

I used a marlin in 357 years ago the heavy bullets that I could find then were rem and win 158gr sp.
I stayed close 50yds after having to shot a coyote 3 times 2 behind the shoulder and one. From the ass end as it was running away.
Head shots on the hogs
And behind shoulder shots on the deer.

I can’t remember if I kept it 2 or 3 years. But o replace it was soon as I could with the 44 mag vs
And have never thought about going back to a 357 leaver gun.

Just in a handgun where it has proven lethal on armadillos and rattlesnakes.

That is awesome, I am going to give that a shot.

Thanks!

Xpedition Archery USED Scrapeline390X Sniper Gray Crossbow XACW1001 - Light Wear - Needs Bolt/Arrow Guide Spring UA5689

If it is in a decent shape, would you be willing to sell it for $100 shipped? IS it missing the retention spring that goes over the bolt?
Thank you Ferenc

Good morning John, I just read your setup procedure for the northstar duplicator ator. I found it very hand and I did learn some things. I have the same machine and I am having a problem i can not figure out and was hoping you could shed some light on the subject.
