Good evening gentleman , I’ve been approached by a gentleman who would like to breed one of my hound bitches to his male, the male is a mountain cur he brought with him when he moved here from North Carolina. I was wondering if any of are American members could shed some light on the breed for me and if anyone has tried crossing curs with 15” beagles.
From what I have been told there are a number of different cur breeds.
From my understanding they were originally bacilly muts. That sort of became a breed .
Muts that were good at what they did and were breed to do the job.
Yard dog stock dog and hunting dog.
The 2 I have actually had were black mouth cur
And Moutan cur ( if not the one you are looking at probably very close in breed)
The mt cur that I had came out of South Carolina. Brought down with hog hunters to Al. They were good dogs rabbit, squirrel and hogs and one my daughter had as a pet
They were beagle size dog the bigger beagle version.
The black mouth cur was a little bigger.
When I got the mt a buddy did to. She was breed by a red nose pit bull.
He gave most of the pups away.
They turned out to be exalent hog dogs they picked up some weight around 35 lbs for the ones I had. They would track and run the hogs but had the grit to catch to.
They remind me a lot of rodisan ridge backs just a bit smaller
I could see a cur / beagle mix being a extant small game and deer dog
Could be a bit loud and stubborn as a house dog.
But if you put in the time should be a good pet and house guard type dog
