Compiling a list of Factory .458 WinMag Ammo

1. 2010 (loaded with 500Gr Nosler Partitions & 500Gr Nosler monolithic solids at 2100fps).

2. Barnes does 2240fps with 450Gr TSX all-copper hollow points. You mentioned the Federal with 400Gr bullets. There is nothing faster.

3. Hendershots Custom ammunition offers 300Gr & 350Gr loading options with the Barnes TSX bullet. And 400Gr loading options with the Swift A Frame bullet. You could also persuade them to load you up some ammunition on special request with Speer Jacketed Hollow Point, Hot-Cor & Jacketed Soft Point bullets in 300Gr, 350Gr & 400Gr weights respectively.
Ok so it look like this retailer has been holding onto that Winchester ammo for 13 years which explains the bargain prices.

Any concerns with shooting 13 year old DG ammo from a safety point? I'm guessing that's not actually that old but I don't typically hold onto ammo longer than 2-3 years.

From a performance perspective I'm guessing this "new" Winchester 458 ammo won't be plagued with any of the initial powder clumping or velocity concerns.

Its not high end factory, but add to the list PPU. They have solids and soft points.

Oh really? I wasn't aware they made 458.

I'm a fan of their 300 grain 375H&H soft points which I hunt with, and economical.

To be honest, I dont trust them. (that is partly irrational)
I buy PPU 375 HH soft points, they have reasonable accuracy. I never fired these in hunt. It is chepaest ammo in 375 on the market, I use this for training.

In Africa, I was using swift a frame.
I left PPU 375 HH in the camp, gift to outfitter.
I dont think that 375 SP by PPU will be ineffective at plains game.
They should work.
Their premium 375 HH is basically a bullet "GROM". It is like expanding monolithic bullet. The tip is made of lead, or as I hear lately, made of aluminum to initiate expansion.
Can it be recommended for dangerous game?
I dont know.

CORRECTION
I was certain 100% perecent they produce 458 win mag ammo.
But when I went to check their catalogue I did not find any 458 wm on offer.
They do produce 45-70 govt.
So, I apologize for wrong information.

Interesting, I had never heard of these guys. They offer a great variety of projectile weights from 300gr to 730gr.

Some of their calculated numbers have me second guessing though. I wonder what kind of powder they are using to get these numbers vs the larger manufacturers?

For Example.

Their 404grain load is apparently moving 300fps faster than Federals 400gr TBBC and producing 5,800+ ft-lbs. Are Federal loading these guys real conservative or what?

Same story with their 450 grain, moving 300 fps faster than Barnes TSX.

Also they claim the 500 grain projectile moving at 2,100 fps are producing more energy than the faster moving Hornady DGX and Swift A Frame loads. I'm confused.

I've sourced some Nosler partitions and the old Winchester Solids.

Now it looks like Buffalo Bore and Swift are the last of the major producers that I need to find.

I load my 458 with 404 gr Hammers at a mild 2460fps and could easily exceed 2500 if I wanted to using AA2230 powder and 76 gr with no pressure signs.picture of a bullet on the bulls boss

Interesting. So it sounds like Federal really loads their 400 grain Bear Claw conservatively at 2,250 fps if you are achieving these velocities with other powders.

So my Winchester ammo family arrived. I recall you mentioned Winchester discontinued these in 2010.

Any guess to how old these boxes would be? Were they black boxes in the 2000s?

Upon closer inspection one of the boxes is actually 2000 fps while the other states 2100.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
