What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

I’ve never not had a knife on my person (except for flights since the recent unpleasantness) since my father gave me my first Barlow for Christmas when I was 6. I gutted my first doe with that knife when I was about 10.

I have expensive knives and I’ve had cheap knives. I have a full set of cutco knives in my kitchen and Dexter-Russel knives in my slaughter house. I have only one custom knife. I designed it Virgil Campbell’s shop in Moose pass Alaska. It’s a combination skinner/flesher. The bone handle is from the first trophy caribou’s rack I took. I wanted a working memory of him. It is always on a carabiner on my Barney’s pack hunting or on my belt in camp. I never minded hunters not bringing a knife with them to the bush. I just never lent them mine if they asked.

I took a knife, because, well, you always take a knife when you go hunting.
So I took a knife with me on my recent trip to Africa. I used it to scrape the mud out of the soles of my hunting shoes before I packed them for the return trip home. It worked better than a stick.
@Betterinthebush @Rellik - Betterinthebush You think like me - always have a knife on you wherever you go, there is Never a downside to having one and it’s what Men should carry. Rellik, did you “really scrape mud out of soles of boots” with Your knife?? I’m guessing you carry a real crap knife - otherwise we need to report You for “Knife Abuse” !

Here's just the thing: the blade has 'SAFARI' written on it, bookended between a picture of a leopard (?) and a bearded hunter - with his knife! - preparing to do battle.

I feel that Arnold Schwarzenegger would grip a knife like this between his teeth before diving into a river to poke a crocodile or launching himself at an elephant with a merry quip. 'You are von big modderfokker', perhaps, or 'He got der point' afterwards. *

Yours for €10 - 20.

Holy crap, that is one ugly knife!

Right now my EDC is a Emerson Sheepdig Bowie folder, but it changes between some of my favorites. Here are some of my favorite folders.

In the woods--any woods, while hunting or not--I often like the heft of a full tang sheath knife with good surface texture handle and about a 5-inch blade. Sometimes I mount the knife onto my rucksack. I have only used it for mundane tasks, but it has occasionally been very convenient.

I’ve carried a knife (or two) pretty much constantly since I was eight years old. I’m not about to stop that when I go hunting in Africa. So a substantial knife with a 6” blade weighs what one pound in the sheath? Figure you probably won’t need it but it’ll be worth its weight in gold if you do.

@RedTag - Agree, well worth carrying a Knife ALWAYS and everywhere you go - a Man should have a Pocket knife with him at All times. I’ve carried one since 3rd grade including in school and later to work and on Airlines (until after 9/11). To Not carry one while Hunting should result in a Loss-of-hunting-License. Also, many 4” to 6” straight knives weight only 6oz to 9 oz (Buck knives are light and decent quality).

I do not carry a knife during the stalk, but a multi tool in camp
@BlackRhino - SO you are always prepared to Open-a-beer in Camp but LESS prepared in the field? Understanding that most PH’s completely take care of their clients needs - from their safety in the field to a diaper change etc… But man just carry a knife and pretend you know how to use one….You might need to kill a Lion with one —-like Tarzan use to !

Yep, EDC knife check…always on a working Texan. Kershaw Leek, of course. (With partial serrated blade, a requirement for me)

Carry a Leatherman Tool or similar tool from other makers. Handy for extracting thorns and other odds & ends.

Aside from evening campfire conversation over scotch… Purpose? To cut up an elephant sandwich if packed in sack lunch.

@fourfive8 - like asking IF you need to have Sex with your Wife, it should be for more than “Campfire conversation”

I'm planning a small utility knife instead of a trademark hunting knife that I see many of you carry when out hunting. Just want to go light and my philosophy is to carry as less of a load specially around the waist as possible. Already feeling the weight of my 12 pound double on long walks. Am I missing something, please educate me..
Ive never been on a safari in africa. And ive never beem a a fan of huge knives.

Id ask this question. Why as a man should you not always have a knife? Esp in the day and age where alot of knives have other attachments. Eg multi tools and victorinox ect.. may not need to cape a buffalo all the time but there very useful tools.

That's why they invented Swiss Army knives and Leatherman tools. I have nothing against large knives, but the multi tool is the better deal.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
