Just finished this one while waiting for my kids to get out of school. Something for everyone with stories of Africa, bird shooting, Nilgai and lots of other American game-bears and sheep, elk etc. It is old but still relevant and has a handful of good photographs. One I am sure I will read again and again.

I pick it off the shelf every few years and reread a couple of stories. His work is a useful reminder what a difference a bit of specialized education makes in a writer.

I have been reading that as well of late, good stories by the master.

When I was a kid, I was an avid fisherman and only shot competition small bore as a junior. However, as time went on, when my copy of Outdoor Life showed up, I found myself turning to O’Connor’s column before the fishing articles.
I have a number of his books as well as some old copies of OL. Although there are several writers I enjoy reading, JOC stands above.

He was a wonderful writer! I have and reread many of his books often. He had the rare ability to " put you there " like few others. Another from that era was Russ Annabelle who had that same talent.

I believe I have all of JOC's books even his 2 hard to find novels, one of which a movie was based on, with Spencer Tracey and Clark Gable, Boom Town.
Also have all of Elmer Keith's books. His writings required a bit more work to make suitable for publication than did JOC's I have read,....

Just a bit more work ........

I was just given this copy for our 26th Anniversary. A very nice present indeed.

Of course my first read was an article on the .270 Win.

If my memory is correct O'Conner's columns in Outdoor Life were the first Africa hunting stories I read as a young teenager. And with ABC's American Sportsman on Sundays I got hooked on Africa and didn't even know it.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
