Chainsaws and those who use them

Currently have a Johnsered 625, johnsered 2054, husky 355, two stihl MS 170s, and a stihl 009. And burn about five liters of saw gas a year…..‍♂️

Did tree work part time in the '70's. Had a light weight Mac which I used to take aloft. Some older Homelites, red ones. And a Homelite Super Wiz 80, 6 cubic inch, bucking spikes were cast bronzes about 3". Weight was humongus, the small bar was 27" and the big bar was 36" with a bolt on aluminum handle for the man on the other end. It was a beast, never stalled it. Finally wound up with a Stihl 024 in the late '70's and got out of the biz as my new wife did not care for me doing that. Got scars from spurs digging out and hugging trees. I used pole spurs instead of tree spurs since we did a lot of topping and trim jobs. Great experience at the time, not doing it again though!

I burn that much in a long day, 625s are my all time favourite saw.

Climbing is something that doesn’t happen much here, there is only one guy I know of that does it and he does specialty logging around the towns and such.

I have a Husqvarna Rancher. This is me back when I had two legs. Storm made a bunch of deadfall. It would have been much cleaner, but I had to stop for a wandering 11 year old.

I sold all my chainsaws several years ago, because I didn't need them at the time. I had mostly Husky's and big old Homelite with a manual oiler. My favorite was a ported 346XP. That was the last one to go.

That was a sought-after saw .. the community loved it.

That's what I have been told. I was never really a chainsaw enthusiast but I like nice stuff. What are some of the favorite saws these days?
These days it’s the Stihl 500i, 462cm, and the Husky 592xp and 572xp

The 500i is a fuel injected 80cc saw that weighs around 13 or 13.5 pounds, keeps right up with 92cc saws in almost everything except running 40+ inch bars, and is pretty much as much HP as you can get out of a saw that size. People port them and it opens them up a little, but honestly not enough to care about too much. The 462 is loved by people who don’t quite have the budget for the 500i, and it’s up there in power too. Also loved by people afraid of fuel injection (even though the concrete saws have used fuel injection for 12 years now with no issue)

The 592 is a power hungry beast, some say it’s a bit too heavy (I’ve never personally used one but being the same weight if not heavier than a 661 which I have used.. yeah it’s pretty heavy)

572xp is pretty much the perfect do everything saw for the husky guys.

I stick with stihl because there’s no good husky dealer near me, and I like being able to get saws serviced when something goes wrong or something needs done I don’t want to do

That's good information. I have a friend who has a 572xp and uses it for almost everything.

261 stihls are also a popular saw now , the Chinese clone 272s/266s are gaining traction here along with the 372/395 clones. Holzfforma I’d the name of the clones I haven’t run one myself.

I didn’t bring up the small saws as I don’t really use them or see people use them. 261 is a great saw, but most of what I do is simply too big for it, and for light pruning its too big. I use an old echo CS300 for my top handle but I really don’t do much pruning or light stuff anymore so it hasn’t even been started for over a year now. I should probably do that today now that I think about it lol, make sure it doesn’t sit too long. Anyways I mostly remove dead ash trees from the ash borer. Let me tell you dead ash trees that are nearly 100 years old do not cut easily! A 20” bar on a 462 is more than manageable for me for the branches so I see no reason to use a 261. I run a lightweight 32” bar for the big stuff. Anything bigger than what I can do with a 32” bar has me calling someone else to deal with it with 881’s and 3120’s. But in areas with many pines and firs smaller than 20” in diameter, I bet the 261 would be a great saw!

I’ve never seen a Holtzforma or Famertec or whatever they’re called in person, so I can’t attest to those.

I’ve never run one either, sense our stihl dealer got sold locally and the new owners have run the business in the ground I’ve gone backwards and am back running old saws I run a 670 jonsered and a 520sp for limbing. My hired man is running a 266xp and a 254 as a spare saw. The biggest saw I own currently is a 930 jonsered but that is because of collecting not need.

"Piltz" Stihl.
No one lend much credit, for his sprocket, chain conversions. These are not Ported or hopped up saws"
You can buy complete saws, or just the kit from him off Ebay.

However, still find it interesting!
Little 250, running long bar.

It's incredible the beating saws can take .. they are fast now,

Sharp chain & good dealer!
