God morning gents I have a question in a new to me rifle I just picked up. I bought a Lipseys edition Ruger Hawkeye African in 35 Whelen and I was thinking that it was threaded like my 416 is but it's not, it probably doesn't need it recoil wise but I'd like to play around with a supressor and pistol bullets and maybe some extra heavies for nighttime pigs. It has a nice barrel band brass bead front sight that'll have to be moved back to be threaded, I don't want to cut and reinstall i don't want to shorten the barrel. Can it be heated and moved back an inch it two or is it bonded to the barrel somehow? Thanks for any info

Likely silver soldered. But maybe glued on with epoxy. Heat it some and see if it releases. Reattaching may be tricky. Barrels are tapered and yours may be too thick further back from muzzle to accept the same barrel band.

A picture would help, in may need the sight insert removed to check for a screw beneath it,or as stated it could be soldered on, most likely you will need to remove it completely and clean it up inside and the barrel, then either ream or carefully hammer it back onto the barrel to stretch the metal to fit where you want it to be, then resolder, or if screwed on, drill and tap. Then you’ll need the thread cut before refitting. Not something for anyone to do, it is easy to make a mess of it

Oh I have no intention of doing it myself I just want to know if it's doable without having to cut it and put on a new one. I'll post some pics when I get home. Thanks

Have you removed the front sight insert from the front sight base? It's entirely possible that the sight base/band is retained via a screw that's currently covered up by the sight insert. If so, you'll be in luck.

The comment above about the barrel being tapered doesn't really matter - there's nothing saying that you cant adjust the inside diameter of the front sight base to slide further back (assuming it is removable).

If indeed the front sight base is removable, you might be really lucky and not have to have the barrel reblued/refinished, along with the front sight.

If it's not removable and it's brazed to the barrel etc., the barrel will likely need to be refinished at a bare minimum, if it's even possible to remove the front sight base without having to chop the barrel.

What is the minimum you would take.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
