Can we leave Jo'berg airport and return in 7 hours?

Arrive 3:25 pm will have to pass through passport control get luggage and then get checked in again that in its own would easily take 2 hours.

35 min to get off the plane
20 min passport control
Luggage another 20 min
Check in for departure flight another 40 min

That gives you 5 hours 1 hour to go anyplace neat and want to see plus route back another hour.

Also you will need to be back at the airport by 8pm and then it will also be dark.

I think next door Emperors Palace or what WAB mentioned.

You don’t really have that much time. If it were me, I would go to Quills for dinner. That is the restaurant in the intercontinental hotel on the airport grounds. It’s been years since I ate there, but at the time it was outstanding. Their wine list was truly impressive.
Ditto that idea.

I may have asked my question on the wrong thread previously, question is about our 7-1/2 layover in Jo'berg from Windhoek; can we safely leave the airport, have dinner and see the city, in that time frame? Back through Jo'berg customs...we arrive 3:25 from Windhoek, don't depart for Atlanta until 10:55 PM...Thanks, Mike Wachtel
Mike,

It is all doable but I would not leave the airport. You never know how long everything is going to take Going in and out. 7.5 hours sounds like a long time but it is really not. Your wife can shop, y’all can have dinner, and relax in one of the lounges.
I also have a 7 hour layover in June on my way back from hunting the EC with Frontier Safaris. I will be firmly parked in the Mashonza lounge which is the small one upstairs. Pre-COVID the food was always good and it is just a small comfortable place where you are likely to strike up a conversation with some very interesting people! The lounges in JNB are not stellar by any measure but you can pay a small fee to get in and don’t need any kind of status.

Assuming you want to go to Sandton or Rosebank take the train from the airport. At the station inside the airport buy the train card from the worker at the window, not the machine, and tell them that you want to go to xxx and return to the airport. They will sell you the correct fare and card. Yes you have to buy a card and the fare to ride the train.

Cambanos is close to the airport if you want souvenirs. Quills is at the Intercontinental for Dining. I prefer Nandos, it’s cheap and good, in the food court.

There really is nothing to see in Jo’berg, and you really don’t have enough to time for Pretoria unless you take the train and your arrival time not really.

Why are taxis not recommended?

Not sure your price range. Have a 375 H&H with a muzzle brake. Nice rifle only fired a few times. Also a Mossberg 375 Ruger its been used and shows a few hunts on it.
