Almost as powerful as the .35 Whelen!:A Outta:
@sestoppelman
No mate over 1,000 fpe of muzzle energy short of the Whelen with the same weight but the Whelen will never throw a 400 grain plus projectile down the barrel.

I did say, "almost".
However I believe top hand loads in the .45-70 will produce more energy than the Whelen in Ruger No. 1 or Siamese Mauser if desired, maybe not in a Marlin.
Nick Harvey has loads of nearly 2200 fps/400 gr in his book. Thats 4200 ME.
As you point out with the Whelen, its usually listed as 50K max pressure.
Same thing with the .45-70. Its top loads even in the Ruger are usually held at 40K. Load it up to 50K and its a whole 'nother animal.

A mate had a Siamese Mauser. He was loading one day and had to go to the loo, so I turned the manuals page and found loads for the Siamese Mauser. I loaded up 6 full power 400 grainers and put them in my pocket. His loads were for the trapdoor.
We went out to his range and shot some gongs with his loads, nice and mild.
I loaded up with the full power loads and handed him the rifle. Imagine his surprise when he pulled the trigger. It was hilarious.
The old warhorse when loaded properly does things the Whelen can only dream about.
I used to load the mates marlin with 350s and 52 grains of H4198/2207.
With my big boofy hands that bitch used to pound the fingers if I left then in the lever. The only way I could shoot it was use the lever as a pistol grip. If I didn't the lever had my finger bleeding in 2 shots

Replacing it with this 1972 NIB Marlin 45/70 22"[emoji95]!! ..But first to the custom shop for 20"...Action job and nice thin brown rifle pad..plus Cerakote incase it makes it to Alaska [emoji199][emoji199][emoji199][emoji1783]

@SAFARIKIDD
If you are doing that get it magna ported as well. It will help with muzzle rise and make follow up shots faster.

Hey now... That's getting kinda personal: my GBL resembles that remark. :ROFLMAO: I happen to think a GBL looks plenty nice. You know what makes it look prettier still? Laying it across a zebra or buffalo (insert your own animal here).

I am glad I didn't have the money for this, because I wouldn't even pause to consider hauling it into the brush for bear or moose, or to dream of taking it to Africa. If I own a gun, it's hunting.

I read an older thread that mentioned you having some 9.3x64 brass. Do you still have some? I am looking for 100 pcs, maybe 200.
