This is a so called "Ischler Stutzen". Ischl is a small town in Austria, and may be, the first rifles of this type came from this town or area. But I do not really know.
"Stutzen" is a german word for a "short rifle". The rifles are single shot, break open, under lever, full stocked hammer-guns. .This particular gun is a 6,5x57R with octagonal barrel, and made around the turn of the last century. Now it is more than 100 years old, and I wished, I would be in this condition, when I am so old. Gams do not like it!!!

Sorry, there is no "story".... Gams is not an unusual prey where I live and hunt. Sometimes, they are hard to come by, but I like the challenge, especially with an old rifle.
The rifle also has a peep sight, and it is a real thrill, to hunt like our grandfathers did.

Thanks for sharing the pics!

This whole hunt from the chamois to the rifle is pretty cool. Congratulations!

Most excellent Sir!

Really nice Ischler! Do you know who fabricated the rifle?
Sometimes Austrian rifles are marked with a circle and monograms underneath the barrel.

FRANK

Congratulations!

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
