Just curious if anyone has or had a Winchester Model 54, and what you thought of it. Here is a Model 54 in 30-GOV'T-06 that I inherited a few years back, and the serial number dates it to 1929. I'm almost sure that it has an aftermarket stock, as it looks like none of the original Model 54s that I've seen. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet, but I've seen positive reviews on their accuracy (wish I could say the same for their trigger).

A really NICE looking rifle for it's age. Looks to have been well cared for.

Wish I did, there just a nice simple rifle especially if it just has sights like it should. Had to pass on the last one I saw at the gun show, not super nice but it was around $400 and I was like $50-$75 short.

Thanks, and the aftermarket stock probably helps since the original stocks were pretty plain looking. My dad was a gun collector for over 50 years and took very good care of his stuff, but i don't know the story of where he acquired this or if he was the one who restocked it.

Well, I really like the stock. I would rather have a nice aftermarket stock like that versus a beat up and/or maybe one with cracks in it on a rifle that wasn't a true collector piece? Even then, I'm not a collector and use my rifles, so.....

I just pulled it out of the safe to take a fresh look at it, and I had forgotten that it has a White Line honeycomb recoil pad with "Blackburn Custom Stocks - Fort Worth, Texas" imprinted on it. So i think that confirms it is an aftermarket stock, albeit I cannot find any Google results for that stock maker (I suppose they've long since shut down). Regardless, it seems to be well done.

54s are great!
They feel right to me and are reliable, accurate rifles.
The only real detractor is the blind magazine but that only comes into play at the end of the day when the rifle needs to be unloaded.
Ergonomically ,they are set up similarly to Oberndorf Mausers. I would say stocked for open sights.
Another plus is that they were offered in 22 Hornet and 30-30 Win.
A 54 in 30-30 allows one to use all sorts of 30cal projectiles not appropriate or lever action 30-30s.

I read an older thread that mentioned you having some 9.3x64 brass. Do you still have some? I am looking for 100 pcs, maybe 200.
A wonderful trip to Hungary with a very special friend !
