Any bird hunters in Jersey?

No bird hunting in Joisy, just turkeys, coyotes and groundhogs. Born in Ay Cee a long time ago. Spent a lot of time on the boards and the Steel Pier.

Bit of a history lesson...the De Carteret family are one of oldest families still occupying the family manor house in jersey....they were given big chunk of eastern usa by Charles 2nd after he was crowned king on the restoration of the monarchy....they were anti Cromwell...

Done quite a bit of waterfowling in Virginia, both parents are from Virginia so we spent a lot of Christmas vacations in the Shenandoah valley.
I’ve actually done most of my waterfowling on the eastern shore of MD. Killed a few grouse in the Shenandoah and across the line in WV though.

Hmmm, you’re gonna have to help me out. I’m Canadian. That’s what we call it in the frozen north.

My dad and I would jump shoot mallards and black ducks on the Shenandoah and the North, Middle and south rivers that ran by Waynesboro. Also hunted swan and geese along the Northern Neck of the Rappahanock. Great times but I haven’t been back in years since a good friend from Leesburg passed away.

Ah, my wife corrected me. Got it now.

The woodcock pile up at Cape May at Higbee Beach waiting for a favorable wind to cross Delaware Bay. The dog would have to decide which bird he wanted to flush.
I live most of the year and do some bird hunting in New Jersey but also have a house on the Eastern Shore in Maryland where I do most of my bird hunting.

Not from New Jersey but my brother lives there and I’m an avid bird hunter. Just down the road in Virginia. I’ve hunted woodcock around cape may but it’s been years.
@Russ16 - I think Woodcock are the only “Wild” upland bird left in NJ (excluding waterfowl). Quail & Pheasant extinct since early 2000s - only pen raised/released birds, the State even closed the Quail season years ago and more recently CLOSED Riffed Grouse as they are now extremely rare. I bought a pointing dog in the 1980s and think I hunted some of the last Wild Quail and Grouse into the 1990s. But, some very good duck & goose hunting as well as Sea Suck hunting off the Coast.
My Son and I started to travel to South Dakota just to hunt wild pheasant and it is worth the drive —- they are Nothing like the Pen raised birds. Once in a while we catch a decent woodcock flight and get into birds for a few days and that’s great —-when it happens. For me, its worth traveling to States with decent populations of Wild Birds (Texas, Montana, Wyoming etc..)

I’ve been doing a week or more a year in SD for 20 years now. Absolutely worth the drive. Especially if you get west river and chase some prairie grouse as well. Pheasant numbers aren’t as good west river but still better than almost anywhere else.

@Russ16 = in the 1990s we traveled to Kansas each year for pheasant and quail —-was Great back then but NOT Now, bird numbers have fallen sharply for past 15 - 20 years and Not worth it, the guides we used stopped guiding bird hunters because there were so few and told me to “Go to South Dakota”….and I did

Kansas still has some hot spots. I had a fantastic dog for a little over a decade that frankly took me bird hunting and got me away from big game for a while. He retrieved 55 species of birds in 17 states before it was all over. But his ashes are in a special place in SD. If all goes according to plan mine will be there too some day.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
