Any Appetite for a New <$10K Double?

Not sure if pressures would be acceptable but 45/454/460 or 500 smith could be popular.

375 is a great offering

A North American double could be well marketed with anything in the 308/mauser/06 class

Reliability and regulation are more important than the specific chambering.

Could also consider a Bobro KOFN type mount

We also like our thermals

I’m not too excited by a 45/70 double, but it depends on which 45/70 load its regulated. 45/70 really runs the gamut from some from some pretty anemic black powder type loads, to some more interesting modern loads.

450/400 would be much, much more popular; but I get it, you’re running a product line and price differentiating.

Another option would be a 405 Winchester. It’s rimmed, a classic, and some factory loads are available, even ones with pointy bullets.

As Odinsraven mentioned, 303 British would be pretty darn cool.

All,

As some of you know, I manage a brand of double rifles (Chapuis). I am kicking around some ideas for 2026 new product introductions. One of them is to offer a basic model with no engraving, 2-star wood and no special finish, that would retail for less than $10,000 in 2026.

The calibers I'm thinking about are .375 H&H and .45-70. Configuration would be the same as my African doubles (large action, 26" barrels, express sights, double triggers, ejectors, manual safety).

Why the .45-70? Because with it, hunters could also use it here in the US, especially in states that allow straight-wall cartridges for big game. Why no .450-400 and .470? Because doing so would necessarily cannibalize from my other two lines, the Iphisi and the Elan Classic & Artisan, which are selling well.

Also, I'm thinking of including mounts for RMR red dots on all my African-sized doubles, free of charge.

I'd like to hear your thoughts about this, as well as any suggestions you may have (realistic!) for anything else.

Thank you all in advance, as always.
I will say flat out if I could afford it I would buy one in 45-70 or 9.3x72r in a hart’s beat.
But that amount of cash for one gun has been gone for me for a few years now

Hi Tom,

Another vote for 450/400.

RMR mount would be great.

Forgot the 303 would be another option I would have conciderd

375 Flanged and 303! Most US hunters wouldn’t pay 10k for a deer rifle, but quite a few would in a cool classic rimmed cartridge!

How much under $10K? I would think you have a pretty good idea of demand in that price range based on the last couple years’ sales of the Iphisi as it was right at that price point prior to the recent increases.

I love the look of a “funeral gun” but it would need to be quite a bit below $10,000 or chambered in something interesting to persuade me to not just save a bit longer and get something I really want.

@Tom Leoni

You're the best person to ask a couple of questions to:
1) What brand of ammunition are the Chapuis .470 Nitro Express double rifles regulated for ?
2) Does the Chapuis warranty cover monolithic solid bullets being used in them (like Barnes Banded Solids) ?

Hello, @Hunter-Habib ~

Great questions:
1) Norma PH RNSN 500 grains
2) Absolutely yes. It's modern German-sourced steel and it can take all modern bullets.

All Chapuis doubles come with the actual regulating target in the box, along with the load information, including brand, type, weight and lot number.

A few other considerations:

- I would love to offer a double in .303--heck, I introduced the Uberti Courteney in that caliber!--but I'm afraid the minimum order quantity would make it unfeasible, since it would be a brand-new caliber for them.

- As far as 9.3x74R, Chapuis already offers it in all their small-receiver models--the X4, RGEX, UGEX and REX. This can be ordered at any time. The X4 is currently in stock both in 9.3 and .30-06.

Thank you all again for your excellent suggestions.

So…I see you already have models out there in .30-06 at say 9k etc
How do those sell?
Both suggested calibers would sell better than that I would think albeit many (including myself) would just keep using a .375 Bolt Action.
To me the Double needs to be a classic caliber above the .375
The .45/70 is a good classic choice that is seeing a resurgence and would fit a niche
How many units would sell? I have no idea

Understanding the concerns about your other lines….

But another vote for 450/400 here!

I tend to agree with the others’ suggestion that sales volume in the proposed rifle may well offset any reduction of sales on the higher end.

What's the obsession with .303 in a dbl rifle?
Genuinely curious question.
Classic rimmed cartridge.

I know a guy in RSA, who was shooting 303 out of a little 410 side by side shotgun;) Not sure how good an idea that is and I'm equally sure it could hit the side of a barn at 10 yards.....

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
