9.3x62

I cannot recommend a trip on Buff with a 9,3x62 for a "dream hunt".
It's always the argument, that the 9,3 was actually created for Big Game. But that's not true.
It was designed for the poor man (mostly farmers), who needed a gun for everything out there in the african wide open to fill the pot, and/or possibly being saved from getting eaten or trampled to death from african nature. It was the absolut minimum for the worst maximum.
Those guys, buying in these days a 9,3, mostly didn't have the funds, to buy Rigby, Purdy or W&R!
I'm sure, otherwise they would have.
And, 9,3 was for sure better than the 7x57 in military carbins, which were earlier the most common used gun around there.

Now things are a bit different. Today the buffalo herds know exactly what is going on, if perceiveing oversea after shave! That brings up adrenalin level in the blood of those black monsters, and as I experienced myself, that stirrs up the pott for unbelievable things, which will happen, if that shot You made, is even on the right spot. Those buffs are the black version of superman. If wounded, double that! Even with a torn apart heart, those buffs don't stop, if warmed up really good.
Art Alphin from A-Square said it already years ago: Use always enough gun!

My experience is, that two procedures will be most successful:
1. Use a real big bullet to let loose Your buff so much blood, that the adrenalin can't circulate anymore or
2. Shoot him in the head for instant kill. Which is another challenge.

You will learn, that shooting at a buff even full broad side is a tricky thing, better forget about the headshot and use really big bullets to do the more promising blood-run-empty-trick!
My personal advise would be minimum .416 upwards, better .458 settle. Remember, You are planing a "dream hunt" ?
Well sir I do appreciate your input. No, I've never hunted buffalo before but I've been hunting in Africa for 10 years now. For what it's worth. I've talked a number of PH's and other folks whose opinions I trust. The majority are of the opinion that the 9.3 is capable of harvesting buffalo. They have done so themselves and many a client has done so also. Is it ideal? No, but then again NO caliber is a 100% sure thing. My 375 H&H offers more frontal area at impact and slightly more horsepower, but not much more. Either one will take a buffalo. I appreciate your sage advise. My time as a combat veteran and when I wore a badge, I've already hunted the most dangerous game on earth. From the people I know who have vast amounts of hunting buffalo, the 9.3 or the 375 will do the job with proper shot placement. If there is any doubt, Then it's no shot. Thanks again for your input.

Zastava left hand. I’ve taken it to Africa for a plains game safari. Beautiful wood for a “cheap” rifleView attachment 720806View attachment 720807

I don’t know if these images were set up simply to capture shots of the gun or if you were actually hunting and took them on a whim but my first thought was “This chap hunts whistle pigs with a 9.3? Nice!” Probably not what you were doing but, growing up hunting groundhogs here in PA, I associated the greenery and setting with that activity.

Here’s my current 9.3x62. Tikka T3X.

Here is my LH Zastava LK M70 in 9.3x62, she weights in a 9 lbs 10 oz loaded and is ready for deer season.

This is a kitchen counter copyright infringement. Cease and desist! Hahaha! How does she shoot?

Wait, I gave you credit. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: I've only shot her with open sights, put this old Leupold just to see how she looks.

Here is my R8 in 9.3x62 with her new stock.

That H&K 940 brings back some memories. I had a 940 and a 770 (I think that is correct?. It was the 308 version). Unfortunately in 1996 we had a forced gun buyback and I watched both of them get completely crushed. They were both fantastic rifles. Is that 940 yours? Do you still have the original owners manual by any chance?
Yes, there were 3 versions.
The 940 was in 7x64, .30-06 and 9.3x62, the 770 was in .243 Winchester and .308 Winchester and the 630 in .222 Remington and .223 Remington.
Sorry to hear your rifles were the victims of stupid political decisions. Unfortunately, it also happened here for some of them. It's easier for politics to pick up legal guns belonging to serious citizen than going in suburbs where AK are now everywhere, at least in my country.
One the photo, it is my neigbour's rifle.
However, my father has got two 940 in 7x64. The oldest version has a long and polygonal barrel while the more recent one has the short barrel with a classic rifling and driven hunt sight.

I think I already have it somewhere but we can find it easily on internet :

I hunt whistle pigs with all my big game rifles each summer. If you can hit them, big game is a walk in the park. They are great for stalking practice.

Better make sure your Safari operator and PH are ok because in SA it is not legal. Other countries I do not know. I would like to use mine on my next trip if the PH is ok with it

Not true, it is a provincial regulation.

^ I’ve just got a copy of this book - a great resource for those of us that see the mighty 9.3x62 for what it is - one of the finest cartridges ever developed.

That is a great book
