The $28k is what was shown to us during the auction, and the link above that mdwest posted also aligns with the value shown during the auction. Having never gone on an African Hunting trip before it sounded like an amazing opportunity to me, hence why I bid-up to 6 people, luxury accommodations, meals and drinks, plus low pro hunter to guest ratios sounded exactly like what I wanted. But as I said I don't think I'll be able to go, hence why I'm looking to see if someone else could take advantage of this.

Regarding the fees--I don't set the trophy fees the safari charges, but I can get values if anyone has questions. Or I can put you in touch with the POC they gave to me.

All that said, yes this is my first post, as I'm completely new to this world, and this seemed like a reputable place that might help me find someone who could benefit from this if I can't go.

Not trying to burst your bubble but you’re highly unlikely to find anyone on AH who would give you anything close to what you paid, unless they have more money than sense. The accommodations they offer are inline with most other outfitters, meals and drinks are always included as is a similar guide to guest ratio. We see a thread like this every couple months.

To put it bluntly you were preyed upon on at that charity auction and overpaid on something that was WAY overvalued. Hopefully the money went to a great cause. That said, your options are to essentially to talk with the outfitter and see if they’ll let you move it back a couple years (I think they might due to them being willing to transfer it), eat the cost of the trip and not go, or see if you can sell it for a fraction of what you paid. I suspect most of us on AH likely wouldn’t even do the last because of their trophy fee costs being so outlandishly priced. By comparison, where I hunted in Zambia earlier this year, the trophy fee on Impala was $250ea

There are some, mostly new members, that try to come to AH to scam. We’ve seen this more often lately, so we are a little cautious…

That said, do you know anyone on this site that may vouch for you? That helps with credibility.

Otherwise, the vetting process can be a little tough. For new members or non-contributing members trying to sell things here, it can almost seem or feel like hazing. No offense.

If this was a donation to a charity for tax write off, I don’t see why the original poster could not move the hunt back several years, assuming the outfitter will permit him to do so, bring a few friends, and potentially have a really great time. Albeit an expensive time, but still, a really great time.

I’m not a CPA or Tax Lawyer so take this with a grain of salt but mine has always told me you can only write off items purchased at a charity auction for the amount over and above FMV (Fair Market Value).

In this case the outfitter claims that is $28,000. If the OP paid $20,000 there’s nothing to write off. Where auction writeoff’s come into play is traditionally with Governor’s Tags, hunts with celebrities, or other High Profile items. Example 2025 New Mexico’s Big Horn Sheep Raffle Tag went for roughly $1.2 Million. The actual cost/value of the the tag is $3,173. That means the purchaser could write off roughly $1,196,827 but conversely if it went for $2,500 they purchaser couldn’t write off anything. Of course the caveat is the money must go to an actual 501(c)3 charity and not all charity auctions have an actual 501(c)3 arm payment goes to.

Kind of a sad story. @375Fox has done his homework. Apparently this charity auction outfit is just a proven scammer with a new letterhead. Did the charity who is supposed to receive funds have a real name? Might be a good idea to contact them and let them know what happened.

The trophy fees are beyond ridiculous. Totally absurd. There's so much South Africa safari competition ... good ethical competition ... I have to wonder if that outfit is actually operational. Seems unreal. Even if I knew five other guys who were chomping at the bit to hunt Africa, I'm not sure I could in all good conscience advise them to get involved.

So, am I understanding this correctly that you've already laid out $20K or just a deposit? If just a deposit, let it go and move on. It is extremely unlikely you will find anyone else here (or I think anywhere else) willing to take the offer @ $20K. In the meantime we will deal with those ripoff scammers here. And hopefully the charity involved, if there really is one, will find out what's happened and disassociate itself from Theron.

Just curious if you maybe bought this six guy package thinking you could offer hunting trips to prospective clients for your business? It happens and sometimes it works out well netting clients. But it's risky. The trophy fees they would get stuck with at the end would be a whopping panty-filler ... unless your company intends to pay that bill too. And red flags flying before the trip usually means you can expect some trouble after you arrive. Clients who were set up by you for a safari disaster likely won't look favorably on doing business with your company. Whether or not such gifted junkets can be written off as business expenses ... maybe ... maybe not. Anyone got an answer?
