I won this trip at an auction recently, but due to some work issues, I don't think I can make it so wanted to see if I could sell it as a backup plan. It's showing as worth $28k, but I'd be willing to sell it for $20k.

Here's the details:

Your Charity Safaris 7 Night/ 8 Day South Africa Hunting Trip with 6 full days of hunting for 4-6 hunters includes the following :

  • 1 X 1 South Africa Professional Hunter (PH) to Hunter ratio for six (6) full hunting days
  • Transfers from/to Johannesburg, SA Airport to Lodge
  • All the transports in the hunting area
  • Hunting for SCI Trophy Class animals, not representative animals or culls
  • 7-Nights & 8-Days exclusive luxury lodging with Theron African Safaris
  • Three meticulously chef prepared meals per day, plus appetizers
  • All drinks including alcohol, wine and beer
  • Field preparation and delivery of trophies to taxidermist
  • Access to our Airline Consolidators for discounted airline pricing
  • Assistance with choosing a USDA Certified Trophy Import Broker
  • Assistance with choosing a USDA Certified Taxidermist (only if necessary)
  • Assistance with securing your U.S. Customs Form 4457.
The cost for Non Hunters for our South Africa Hunting Trip is $2000.00 with a $500.00 deposit required to confirm non hunter reservations .

Your Charity Safaris 7 Night/ 8 Day South Africa Hunting Trip at Theron African Safaris and requires that each hunter pay a Hunter Trophy Fee deposit of $2000.00 per hunter. The Hunter’s $2000.00 Trophy Fee deposits are required to confirm your hunting trip reservations and dates. Each hunter’s Trophy Fee Deposit of $2000.00 will be applied 100% towards the hunter’s final invoice at the end of the hunt. Also, each hunter is required to harvest a minimum of three (3) animals during their 6 full days of hunting at Theron African Safaris.

:S Welcome: To AH

Have you confirmed that this hunt is transferable??

There’s no mention of what animals are to be hunted… I’m assuming all that is included is the day rate for accommodation/drinks/meals? Or if animals are included, you’d need to list them…

Assuming you get 6 hunters x 7 nights in camp… that’s 42 nights of accommodation.. $20k / 42 =$476 day rate… that’s definitely on the steep end…

This was an auction hunt… more often than not auction hunts are won way below the assigned retail value… and far more often than not outfitters inflate the retail value of hunts because they earn more “credit” with whatever organization they donate the hunt to based on the stated value of the donation..

Before anyone makes an offer to buy, you’re likely going to have to provide a whole lot more information… like exactly who the hunt is with, what dates the hunt can be made, whether or not animals are included, if animals are included, what are they, and how much did you actually pay for the hunt..

If this is who the hunt was booked with, there are some pretty serious red flags there for me… $1600 trophy fee on a blesbok???

Sorry, I thought I put that info in the original post. Yes the hunt is through Theron Safaris.

I have a pdf they sent with all the details, but I didn't think I could upload a pdf here. If you'll DM me we can exchange email info, and I can send that brochure with all the specifics.

I just want to make sure I’m understanding your offer, especially as a new member with no other posts

You won a 6 Day Hunt, for 4-6 Hunters in South Africa for $20,000, that’s valued at $28,000. It doesn’t include any trophy fees and each Hunter is required to pay a $2,000 trophy fee deposit towards a minimum of 3 animals.

Is there any breakdown on what/how they came to this $28,000 value? What/where did you buy this hunt from?

Just throwing it out there but there are countless well known and well respected South African Outfitters on their forum who charge $250-500 a day in rates before trophy fees and even on the high side that comes out to a significantly better offer than your “offer”

The $28k is what was shown to us during the auction, and the link above that mdwest posted also aligns with the value shown during the auction. Having never gone on an African Hunting trip before it sounded like an amazing opportunity to me, hence why I bid-up to 6 people, luxury accommodations, meals and drinks, plus low pro hunter to guest ratios sounded exactly like what I wanted. But as I said I don't think I'll be able to go, hence why I'm looking to see if someone else could take advantage of this.

Regarding the fees--I don't set the trophy fees the safari charges, but I can get values if anyone has questions. Or I can put you in touch with the POC they gave to me.

All that said, yes this is my first post, as I'm completely new to this world, and this seemed like a reputable place that might help me find someone who could benefit from this if I can't go.

First, welcome to AH! You mention you have not hunted Africa before…you will love it when you do get to go! You are quickly finding most of us have many safaries under our belts in many countries including SA so we know what the range of costs should be. Also most of us are very wary of auction hunts given the outfitter tries to lure new Africa hunters with very inflated “value of the hunt” which in our experience can almost be laughable they are so high give three very inexpensive animals think warthog, bleesbok and impala then have crazy high trophy fees that make no sense to experienced Africa hunters. As mentioned while not always but most of the time you find you could get a similar hunt from our great sponsors for half or better your “auction win.”

@RowdyMoose you are new so ill let you know you will probably hear a-lot on your post as ppl on here have more experience on hunting the dark continent than most likely any other resource online. Auction hunts are hit or miss most say a miss although i have had good ones and ok at best experience on auction. Now that hunting season is wrapping up and auction/booking season is starting that package will be offered by many outfits at a fraction. If you really have anywhere near 20k or even 10k into it just go and enjoy the experience. Especially if it will be the first time.

I don’t know anything about Theron Safaris or charitysafaris.com … but there are lots of red flags here… if you’ve already paid $20k id be a little worried at this point that you’ve paid WAY too much for what you’re going to receive…

For example, Bos en Dal Safaris does a “beginners” package for $2995 that includes 3 animals, accommodation, drinks, transportation, etc etc… for 6 days / 5 nights… 6 hunters could hunt for just under $18k and that INCLUDES 3 animals…

Theon is offering impala and blesbok at $1800 each… 3 animals is going to cost each hunter a minimum of $5400… $5400x6 =$32,400 in just trophy fees.. plus $20k already spent on day rates.. so Theon is essentially getting $52,400 for a very similar hunt that Bos en Dal offers for $18,000.. and Bos en Dal is very well established and regarded, and a dozen or more members here on AH has hunted with Gerrit and his team at Bos en Dal (easy to get references, be assured of a good deal, quality hunt, etc)…

At the vast majority of outfitters in South Africa a blesbok or impala are less than $500..

The day rate and the trophy fees at Theon are concerning to me….

I’d also be asking some key questions (questions you should ask any outfitter)… how large are the properties you’re going to be hunting? Will there be other hunters in camp while you’re there or is camp exclusively your party’s? Etc etc)

Thanks for the info!

Trust me I do still want to go! I just have a huge work opportunity that if I land for my company could keep me tied up for the next couple of years unfortunately.

If there is a lower price that might make this more desirable, I'm open to discussing with anyone interested. I set the price based on it being much lower vs the advertised price, so I thought that might be a good value for someone.

Assuming an average day rate of about $300 per hunter per day, you’re dealing with a real world value of about $12,600… the challenge I think you’re going to have selling the safari to an experienced hunter is they can pretty much hunt with an outfitter they already know and trust for +/- that amount … so at $12,600 there isn’t a whole lot of incentive there…

Combine that with $1800 impalas… where most outfitters are going to sell basic plains game like that for about $450… and this becomes a really hard sell at any price honestly…

Then there’s the 6 hunter requirement… getting even 3 peoples schedules coordinated for an international trip is difficult enough… getting 6 to commit at the same time is herding cats to epic proportions…

I do wish you well here and hope you can find a buyer.. and also hope you get to Africa at some point yo hunt… but I think you’re really going to be challenged with this one unless someone is seeing something that I’m missing here?

If you’d like a red flag look up Rick Kennerknect and his previous booking agency that went bankrupt with hunter deposits. I guess charity safaris is his newest hunting agency.

Was this a tax write off for you? How much did you pay for this hunt? Selling a highly inflated $28k auction hunt for $20k doesn’t seem in good faith. Usually these sell for a significant discount from posted value. It’s a marketing opportunity for the outfitter more than a true donation.

Ok. Got it! I assume this is a left hand only safari?

Send me $5,000 and your credit card number, expiration date along with the 3 digit code on the back, and the billing address zip code.

I’ll send you $2,500 via PayPal and a third party check for the remainder; once I have the other 3-5 people to hunt with me…

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
