.458 Win Mag Shotshell Loads

When I seal brass 12g cases I use beeswax on the overshot card, this is with BP for target loads, never used them for hunting, water glass would be probably better for that
Gumpy

I have tried beeswax, I like the water glass better

What is the velocity of this load?

What are other powder options?
Thanks

Take a gander at this again:

About any shotgun data for .410 to 28-ga loads, both powder and shot.
Those are usually about 1100-1200 fps and about 10,000 psi.

A 28-ga load in a .458 WIN MAG might be about 15,000 psi and over 1200 fps.
The shot will get there before the bird hears the gun go off.

I never chronographed one after killing a couple of chronographs with the 12-GaFH 3.85".
Now that I have a Garmin XERO will try to do so.
See if it is confused by the lack of a shotcup wad,
only a swarm of shot, a card wad, and a single gas check.

mgstucson,

When I first tried it, I used a second gas check as the over-powder wad.
Thinking it might scrape lead too.
But I found patterns were much better without it.
It may act as a spreader smacking the shot in the rear.
And does it go sideways while going down the bore or only after it leaves the muzzle ?
Just a thin card wad over powder was better, and the one inverted gas check
roll-crimped at case mouth over a full shot charge.
I like the idea of some glue around the edge of the case mouth/gas check.
Maybe fingernail polish or primer sealant, on primer too.
The shot shells will be carried a lot for the occasional use.
Yes, protruding shot capsules are too delicate.
This is good information on shot patterns in rifled long guns. Thanks.

Sodium silicate, water glass is what it used to be called. Clear as water and dries hard
Also good info. Thanks

Well, yeah! The 458 Win Mag is basically a 45-70 on steroids. Straight case, 500 grain bullet, you know, just like a 45-70. A bit more oomph. Same bullet, just 50% faster. But pretty much useless as far as cartridges go. Very few people even in Africa use it due to failures to penetrate on dangerous animals, and too much recoil to use it every day. Way over-rated. 416 or a 375 are a better choice.

I believe you opened your mouth and stuck your foot in it, we are talking about grouse and snake loads, state side.

Using #12 shot made the patterns look great at 5, 10, 15 feet with a 9mm Glock pistol.
That would probably be a great snake charmer at 5, 10, 15 yards with the .458 WIN MAG,
which was not bad even with #7-1/2 shot size.
Longer range snake (or grouse) shooting is sometimes a good capability to have.

So, the end of the Lott brass would be necked and sit in the bore of the 458WM barrel?

And this, boys and girls, is why drugs are bad for you
Unless it’s meant to be a joke and then the drugs comment still applies

We have an improvement in snake shot loads for the .458 WIN MAG.
Too easy.
.416 Rem.Mag. brass eliminates having to neck down the .458 Lott brass in a .416 Rem.Mag. FL die.
Just use .416 Remington Magnum brass,
and the handloading dies for that cartridge and the .458 Lott, and a .416 gas check over-shot topper.
Squeeze down the .416 shoulder diameter a wee bit in the .458 Lott die.
Leave neck diameter unchanged.
Headspaces on belt, of course, so shoulder location is a non-factor.

Feeds and chambers slickly from magazine of Freki an FN M98 .458 WIN MAG with Sunny Hill drop magazine.
The .416 case neck just hangs out in the .458 WIN MAG throat.
No problems.
Gas check over shot can be sealed with "water glass," fingernail polish, super glue, etc.
That is a lot sturdier than a plastic shot capsule.
No worries:

Good use for either .416 Rem.Mag. or .458 Lott brass, both obsoleted by the .458 WIN MAG
revolution.
Get to dust off the .416 Rem.Mag. and .458 Lott dies too.

When I considered it I thought it might be useful if a cobra stumbled into camp unexpectedly when a .38 was not close to hand !

As handgun use is restricted to the ranger for Aussies it would be unusual to have one close by.

We could take a .410 to the camp but there is safe storage etc to consider so I only carry what I intend to hunt with.

Hi PaulB,
I have a Ballard Arms Model 1885 chambered for .333 Jeffery Flanged. Do you have any idea where I can get ammo for this?

I am new to this forum so I am sorry if I am doing something wrong!
Thank You!
