450 NE Powder Reloading

Okay all my reloader friends, time to reload for my new 450 NE in both 480 grain Hornady DGS and DGX. I have the following powders: RL 15.5, IMR 4350, H4831 SC. which one is the best and which one gives me 2150 FPS with how many grains please? Yes I will run my own QL but know some of our veterans have already figured this out

Just ran QL and as usual found the best powder is my RL 15.5. I get my desired 2150 FPS for the 480 grain bullet at only 78.3 grains of powder. IMR 4350 took 87 grains of powder to get the same 2150 FPS and H4831SC took 91 grains of powder meaning it would kick like no tomorrow. Using the RL 15.5 should yield a real pussy cat! Talked to JJ Perodeau yesterday and he said send her his way as usual for its inspection.

I reloaded some for a friend - 95gr H4831 with 500gr softs regulated in his double.
Took a nice lion with that load.

So just shot my 450 today with RL15.5. I also shot my regulation load of RL15 with 81 grains and a CEB 420 Raptor.

I quickloaded the 15.5 and it shows just a tad slower.

81 of RL 15 was 2213 average. Perfect regulation

81 or RL15.5 was 2310 average. Crossing about 1.5” at 50.

I’m down to three lots of RL15, I mark each lot of powder with which rifles I load each lot for. About a decade ago I ran out of a lot that I was using for my 375 H&H and a couple other guns. The fresh batch I went to next for that rifle required almost 4 more gains to get the same speed.

So what I am trying to convey is RL15 in my experience has varied quite a lot with lot to lot consistency over the 34 years I’ve been loading. I think I have had 5 lots of RL15 since I’ve started.

I stocked up big on the 15.5 hoping it will be a good replacement as I use up the remaining 15. From today’s quick test I think it will work out just fine as a suitable replacement in my doubles.

Awesome! Well done! I am betting if you step down to 79-80 grains RL15.5 no crossing and 0.5 regulation!!!

My VC 450 NE is regulated with 99 grains of H4831 and H4831SC and am quite happy with it.

But I will have to try RL 15 this summer just to compare the recoil.

You will be surprised at how much less recoil there is. I’ve compared it in 5-6 doubles.
