4457 Process?

I’d suggest asking Mr X but I can’t remember them asking for 4457 only the pre-approved permit. I’d consider getting a new 4457 if I was applying for permit on arrival but you already have yours.
I have an email in with Mr X and hope to hear back early tomorrow morning

PDX for the 3rd time. No appointment needed, walk in state why you are there retrieve firearms walk back in to agents. This year was maybe 5 minutes, no ID check and stamp stamp. It was to fast for my liking, triple check your 4457 not sure they did

I just followed what the firearm expediter told me; they were copies anyway, had the originals with me. I had to go through Amsterdam and the papers were what the Netherlands required .... a whole other story.
Yes, the Netherlands requires a copy taped to the outside and a copy inside.

talked to Mr. X last night and all is well, he said they do not look at the 4457 when we arrive besides he said they approved the permit so off we go in 8 days

If it were me I'd just go get another 4457, why chance it II did look at where you're located, kind'a out there, Is there a CB office is Sioux Falls?
yes there is but it is a 120 mile drive each way, and as Mr X said they approved the permit with the 12-19-2022 date and checked with Henry at Rifle Permits an he also said no problem

As Mr X said, don't worry about it.

You will have your firearm permit in your hands once you hit the SAP's office in Joberg and that is all you need in South Africa.

You won't even take your 4457 out until you get back here to the US and go through customs.

AK salmon and crab fishermen are subjected to that test every day out (compliments of Japan!) Take a look at the N. pacific ocean gyre v. the plume of radiation released v. the annual migration of the "seafood." it's virtually the same!
but by-golly the 85% reduction in crab populations was attributed to the 1 degree temp change in the ocean (the big Salesjob.)

Just returned thru Newark from JNB….you better have 4 hours between connections to be safe if traveling with a firearm. Such a poorly handled method of clearing a firearm for a next connection…we were on the ground for 1 hour prior to the rifles arriving at oversized pickup, no one cares. Then escorted thru customs and TSA clearance…it took 20 minutes for TSA to send three rifles thru the XRay, while you wait in the lower level Terminal C, for the OK… East Coast inefficiency at its best. Chicago ORD….ten minutes and finished. Heads up..when you are clearing customs tell the agent you have a firearm…another agent secures and retains your passort escorted to carrousel, he then hands off your passport to another agent, unknown to you, and hopefully you are lucky enough to find that agent around the oversized pickup location, then you provide that agent with the 4457 that they then enter that information into a computer, to “speed up” clearance prior to clearing thru customs with you firearm.

Mr. X is top-notch from what I've heard. He is doing out permits/paperwork for our safari first week of May. I am in the process now and a couple clarification points to help you out:

- Every airport is different. Initially, we called a few local CBP offices here in NJ. We got everything from 3 days before, 5 days before, 7 days before, to "just come the day of your flight 3-4 hours early." You have to call and speak with the office in your departure airport.

- EWR (Newark) said we can come up to 7 days before. Mr. X wanted our 4457 30 days before which wasn't feasible. We emailed him and he said to just send him the pre-filled unsigned 4457 and then email the signed one as soon as we have it. I think he just wants to make sure a) you actually went through with it and b) you did it right because it's a problem coming back home more so, not going.

- Check to see if they want an appointment at your airport of departure. EWR told us "just call ahead the day you come to make sure someone is available." They specified the terminal and office we need to go to. We are going 7 days before. Bring the rifle, as you would travel with it (locked case, unloaded, etc.) along with passport, original ownership copy, and flight itinerary.

- 3x copies (plus originals) of everything kept on you. Passport, original rifle purchase receipt, signed 4457, travel itinerary, etc.

Some of this may seem excessive but one thing I've learned in my years of processing licenses, paperwork, certifications, authorizations and similar: You can never have too much supporting documentation.

Good luck and I'm sure you'll be fine. I know my anxiety and anticipation is through the roof at the moment. Can't imagine how you feel being 8 days away.

Perhaps your mistake was flying from Murder Capitol of NJ to Murder Capitol of IL and the USA! LOL Most fly out of JFK. Do not judge the rest of the E. Coast on toxic wasteland NJ. ;) Without the E. Coast, the rest of America wouldn't even exist! ;) Most of us fly out of JFK, primarily because we wish to claim our vehicle upon return. ;) Never a problem at JFK. We also don't have Lightfoots. L O L The problems with most cities is the Union and Dem freebees mentality. How's the auto industries doing out there? lol Judge Ye Not....Most E. coasters detest Chicago, for all the right reasons. ;) I live in the country, because most US cities are now "Shitholes." -DJT

If you leave a message and they don’t call you back then I would Just fill out the form with your gun info and serial number and put it in a case with the bolt out and go to office . See what happens . They might just do it right then .

HookMeUpll I think you have everything in order but why won’t they issue a 4457 farther out than 7 days, they’re good for a year and multiple trips so I don’t see why that matters. Also in 4 trips I don’t think I’ve ever needed an original rifle receipt, all but a couple of my guns are 15 plus years old and don’t remember where I bought them much less know where the receipt might be.

Airport CBP offices may be different as I go to an office in downtown Mobile Alabama, walk in and 15 minutes later on my way home.

The new 4457 has a field labeled "Number" just above the "Name of Owner" field, what needs to go in the "number" field, if anything? I did a quick google search but came up empty.

Nothing, on my last that is where they stamped it.

JFK no longer has a direct flight to South Africa, You now fly out of New Jersey on United or Atlanta on Delta.

Those are the only direct flights.

I can assure that efficiency in ORD with firearms will blow the doors off the inefficiency of Newark with firearms. My three trips thru Newark to Ord has been the same “goat rope” each time. For ORD the be in Illinois with the strictest gun laws, traveling with a firearm is a no hassle, smooth environment. I travel United direct to JNB…Chicago, Newark, JNB….no other direct alternative, unless Delta, ugh, out of Atlanta.

I agree with you but just following their instructions. We got on this way ahead of time when Mr. X wanted a copy 30 days before. The CBP person we spoke to at EWR said "We can't do 30 days ahead, but we can do 7." Whether they actually know what they are talking about or not is up for speculation.

Not for nothing but JFK is probably, hands down, the worst place you can be flying with a firearm from in the USA. 3 gun shooters, hunters, etc. avoid it like the plague. So I am not sure what you're talking about. I heard a story of a car service driver who went to pick up a 3 gun shooter from their hotel. Saw the gun case and said "No sir, can't take you. Sorry." So you might want to rethink that. NJ is better by a slight, very slim margin. EWR doesn't run as smooth as JFK. However, getting to JFK? I'd rather have someone cover me in honey and drop me in a vat of fire ants. Cross Bronx, Deegan, Clearview, Cross Island, etc are roads (barely) paved to hell. I was stuck in traffic on the Cross Bronx/Deegan coming home from a trip once for 4 hours, at 1am on a Wednesday, for literally no reason other than the road is literally like the surface of the moon and needs repairing daily. So if you don't get arrested, you might be stuck in 7 hours of traffic and miss your flight, or end up with a flat tire from the 3' deep pothole you hit.

The only reason people fly from JFK: Necessity. It's a major international hub. There are some flights that only can be had from there. People would much rather go to Philly, Newark, Logan, etc. If you don't, you need your head examined.

EWR is not a great airport but I'll tell you that preaching up JFK is setting people up for failure. Your vehicle gets pulled over and NYPD see's that rifle case? You'll go from making your flight to making bail, whether its within the law or not.

But once again, if you have to fly from or connect there because it's the only option? You have to do what you have to do. CBP is more equipped at JFK because they receive a) so many migrant/immigrant/visa travelers and b) they are basically the international shipping/receiving hub for anything coming overseas to the NE.

And as an FYI, I've taken a dozen flights from JFK, dozens from EWR, and had to literally drive right by JFK once a month for 7 years for work. We have a flight leaving late summer from there the wife and I tried to avoid at all costs. Problem was that it was the only return option for that day.
