gun won't be 100% finished until this time next year. Next semester in class I will make a stock for it and then next summer I will blue the gun.

Question for everyone. Do you all feel a matte finish on the stock and a matte blue is the way to go on this gun since it will be on in the sun and a high polish blue could reflect some of the sunlight or do you feel it isn't a big deal?

I saw one matte finish today and i thought it looked like cerakote. I wasn't to impressed. maybe I will look into a satin finish.

High polish gun stocks and mirror-shiny blue gun metal, THANKFULLY went out of style with disco dancing, bell-bottom pants, gold chains on hairy chests and girly hair on men.

Rust blue is the best of the best but. of course it is expensive.

Therefore, along with enysse and probably some others soon to post here, I recommend the "matte" finish, in other words; glass bead blasted and hot tanked.

As for stock finish, nothing beats hand rubbed oil........nothing.

I envy you for being able to build rifles.

Well in class as part of the grade we have to do one high polish blue. Which most people do on a SxS shotgun and color case harden the receiver. We hot tank all of our guns we blue. I guess I may go mate if I see more of them and come around to liking it. the one I saw today was just very dull and almost a gray color which to me didn't come across as looking good.

The stocks are hand rubbed if we choose to do so.

now VD (unfortunate set of capitals to shorten to ,but been dying to do it ) nothing wrong with the mid 1970s to the end of 80s !!! just cant remember them ....bit of a blur , but apparently had a good time . the finish i would go for is (not sure of the fancy terms) the one used by Rigbys, H&H etc . if you have a nice piece of wood show it off, and to compliment it dont matt the metal work. and totally agree with velo about the building part

Well I got the inside of the action where I milled it out sanded and polished tonight.300 grain bullets are feeding and ejecting everytime. The other mauser is supposed to come in tomorrow so I can get started on it.

Anyone have a good load to try for 270 grain swift A frames? They came in today and now just waiting on powder and brass.

You are correct that VD is the common abbreviation for "Venereal Disease".
However, you obviously don't have the slightest clue that your initials are the equally common abbreviation for "Sexually Transmitted".
Spending too much time worrying about what your fantasy ball game "heros" are up to, and not enough time reading about the huge wide world around you or what?

The "fancy term" is Rust Blue if referring to metal and Hand Rubbed Oil Finish if referring to the walnut.
Blasted shame the instructor is forcing the students to high-polish blue a project.
Oh well, I guess I am not an instructor there and so should keep my big snout out of it.

VD we have to blue seven guns and they require one high polish just so that we do know how to do it incase a customer ever requests it. It also takes much more work to do than matte as we have to sand out all the pits and not just put the gun in a blasting cabinet and drop it in the tank. Are they our guns and should be able to do whatever I want with them? Yes but i do semi understand learning the different ways and not allowing just an easy blast and submerge with all the guns.

Excellent, and rust blue is the gun metal finish of The Gods.
The reason I voted for matte finish is because it seemed like; shiny and matte, were the only options you mentioned in that particular post.
Likewise, matte is my 2nd favorite after rust blue because not only does it keep the rifle from reflecting light toward every animal in the district but, it holds oil very well (important here where I live).
I have several rifles that are matte "blue" (actually turns out flat black as you probably know) and although not even in the same league as rust blue, I think it is way better looking than a bright shiny / high polish blue metal finish (or stainless steel for that matter).

In other news, yep, our business venture could be a good one, especially with a proper slogan.

We do a rust blue on a gun. I am sure I can do more than one gun if I choose to do so. I will check out some more of the matte bluing from other guys that are doing it right now. I looked it up on google images and it had a slightly different color than I saw at school.

I like the name and the slogan for the business venture. I don't think anyone could turn down a business with the name or slogan that show so much care and customer satisfaction.

The action I got today needs a little work before I can get started on opening it up to fit the 300 H&H. It is hard to open the bolt on and close when first cocking. It has eased up from polishing the bolt camming surface but still has a little ways to go. I hopefully will get it done on monday.
