Looking at these two bullets for my 45-70 lever action. Will be mostly for black bear, deer and elk. With the occasional moose hunt sprinkled in. Which one would you choose? Reasons why? I can get both at the moment so availability currently isn't too much of an issue for me. I'm not interested in other bullets

The 405 grain bullet in 45/70 has the trajectory of a rainbow
Suggest the 300-350 which which give you more energy than the 405 grain bullet.
Range - in 45/70
To be effective I suggest if hunting in open country to forget the 45/70.
If hunting in wooded country and ranges are w/in 150 yards then 45/70 w 300 grain bullets.

I'm not too worried about the trajectory, 90% of my shots are under 150yds. I'm comfortable with this rifle to 200yds

Still day 300-350 /more energy than 405 but of wanting deep penetration the 405 grain bullets are excellent.
I made my own 500 grain bullets - didn’t use them much because I was hunting in ridge open country - red deer.

i've used 350 gr Alaska bullet works, bonded 350's in my 45-70, they worked well. they are bonded, usually expanded to .80 and maintained their weight. i suspect the A frames will work as well. as i remember i was getting 2150 fps for velocity.

Out of your choices, I'd go 350gr. And if you look into Cutting Edge or Lehigh bullets, you could probably get away with even a 300gr or less. @michael458 has the low down on this subject.

Of those two choices, either would do fine, both would get the job done. I would lean to the 350 Swift........... There are many good choices today that would accomplish your mission. Cutting Edge combination of 295 Raptor/325 Solids would be good, if you could get some 325 North Fork CPS would be excellent, various Lehigh Extreme Penetrators from 225 gr to 325 gr would be, extreme.

Well i think your choice of bullets is excellent. Either the 350g A-Frame or 405 Woodleigh are great bullets and will extend the level of game a 45-70 was traditionally designed for. Great elk in the black timber or grizzly bear medicine.

I would look at the Hawk 400 gr flat point as a direct replacement for the Woodleigh. One of the advantages of the Hawks over Woodleigh, is the 400 gr flat point is made in two jacket thicknesses, one jacket thickness for light big game (deer, black bear) and a heavier jacket for grizzly, moose.

Are they bonded like the Woodleighs?
