35 Whelen

Of course a 338WinMag will throw that 300gr round 150fps faster with a better SD :cool:
@CZDiesel
And pound your shoulder a lot harder which leads to less accurate shootin.
The Whelen will put a lot BIGGER HOLE in it tho.
That 0.020 of an inch makes a BIG difference and don't forget the 10gn extra weight in the Whelen. Dang man that the equivalent of 2, .117 cal air rifle pellets.
You can't tell me a charging buffalo or elephant can't tell the difference in size. Them is real smart critters, so the extra the Whelen has to offer WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I resized the other 10 Federal once-fired 30-06 cases to 35 Whelen.

This time I chamfered the mouthes (and de-burred) before I resized - as Hoytcanon suggested.

I then resized to 338-06 which takes only a little more force than 30-06 - no splits.
With no additional lube I then resized to 35 Whelen which takes slightly less effort because the case is already sized.

Both steps took noticeably less sizing force than going straight to 35 Whelen and I had no neck splits. This is a small sample size but promising.

for sizing 30-06 to 35 Whelen, if you can, consider a neck anneal after the 338 step before the 35 step. I've sized up a lot of Greek HXP to 35 Whelen with a neck anneal. Your working the brass in the neck quite a bit with stretching it out to 358 size. On the other hand, if you have bucket loads of 30-06 brass to size up, tossing a few for neck splits is likely not a big deal. best of luck.
