338/06 or 25/06?

Well, exactly. :D

Although I'd say the 8x57J (1888) started it all (rimless case) as it preceded the 7x57 (1892). Many magazine gun writers say the 7x57 because the US Army examined it after our encounter with the 7x57 during the Spanish-American War in 1898. That, of course led to the USA's .30-03 cartridge (soon followed by the .30-06 of course).
Yes you are right, I just didn’t make myself clear about the 7x57. I have a 30-06, a 8x57 and a 303( a couple actually) and they all do what they were designed for.

Since I found me a Ruger African in 35 Whelen I have no use turning my Savage 111 06 into one. I've always liked the 2506 but I also had very insane for a 257 Wby so idk if the 25 would be wasted. But I also have a 338WM a 340Wby and now a 35 awhelen so maybe the 338/08 would be pointless too. What do guys think? Or is there another interesting 06 conversation caliber? Thanks
6.5- 06AI, a flat shooting smoker and with a fast twist, you can shoot the new heavy bullets. The 25-06AI is a smoker also, with a fast twist. Or, the 400 Whelen

You have the small stuff covered. With the smae bolt head go with a 400 Whelen with a mag bot face go with a 416 Taylor.

The 25-05 is a capable plains game caliber, trick is to find ammo. Why not 30-06? Proven caliber.

I have a 35 Whelen, a 35 Whelen AI, a 375 Whelen AI, and a 9.3x63, and the last one i would let go of would be the 9.3x62.
That's pretty much a 375H&H junior though isn't it? I've heard a lot about the cartridge but I have a 375H&H, I do love the caliber though

9.3x62 or better yet, a 9.3x64 if you really want something few others in your area have.

Why would the 9.3x62 be the last you would get rid of? What are your thoughts on the 375 whelen? I have two 9.3x62, a 35 whelen and a 338-06, just not a 375 whelen. Just curious. I think highly of the 9.3x62.

I love the calibres you have
To me the 338-06 is an answer to a question that's no one asked. It's nowhere near as good as the Whelen.
The 25-06 is a nice round that easier on barrels than the Weatherby, but you have your fast 25

If'n it was me I would fill the gap with either the 280rem and load it to its potential or a 280AI. DON'T even consider the horrible 270.

The 25-06 hands down. I thought about rebarreling my old 06 to the 25 50 years or so ago and glad that I didn't since that rifle was given to me by my uncle and will just live in my safe or at the range. But I picked up a 25-06 a number of years ago and love it. Low recoil with a 100 grain Barnes TTSX and it is one of the most accurate rifles that I own. I took it out shooting the other day to get ready for a Wyoming pronghorn hunt and it put all 5 of the shots into a 1 1/2 inch group with me in a sitting position at 250 yards. I didn't even bother to pull the bench out since I wanted to get off some rounds in a hunting position.

I have it loaded to 3200 fps and while it will go a lot faster that is the velocity that I planned for this rifle.

The 257 Weatherby while a fantastic round is known for burning barrels depending on how you use it
@JimP
With 54gn of 2209/H4350 and the 100gn TTSX you will get 3,400fps. I know you planned on 3,200fps but that 200 extra fps will extend your range and power while still being easy on barrels.

Does a bear. . . well, you know the rest.

The poor ol' .280 Remington has been around since 1957 and, just like Rodney Dangerfield, it "don't get no respect!" :D

Cheers! Bob F. :)

Ruger M77 Mk II .280 Remington

I love the 280 but unfortunately Remington did it's usual and strangled it at birth by under loading it.
Loaded to its FULL POTENTIAL it's an awesome cartridge. A 25-06, 280 and 35 WHELEN and you can face the world. If'n y'all want to hunt big critters with the 06 case then step up to the 400 Whelen, the equivalent of the old 400-450. Then you have all bases covered with one case.
Bob

Can it not be converted from 30-06? If not then it's not what I'm looking for either
@Axle2010
The 280 or 280AI
If'n y'all want to hunt really big critters a 400 Whelen ( Petrov version). It will equal the 400-450. That way you will have the world covered with one case.

I am fond of the 9.3x62.
Not exactly based on the .30-06 brass but so close that if you can’t find ammunition for it, brass can be made for it from .30-06 in a pinch.
It’s a little tedious but it can be done with some extra time and careful effort.
By it’s 100 years+ reputation, the 286 grain round nose soft is decisive even on heavy tough animals like eland, zebra, waterbuck, etc
Yet, it is easy on skins and edible meat of the smallest hooved little antelopes such as duiker, steinbok, etc.

Lol Bob i know the 270 is a great cartridge but it never pulled my strings like some others have. I just saw that my original post had a typo, I have plans for a 257WBY but I don't actually own one yet. My meager stable of bolt guns is: 243, 308, (2)30-06, 300WM, 338WM (that one is actually a Belgium made BAR), 340WBY, 35Whelen, 375H&H, 416 Ruger and 460WBY. A 458WM, 257WBY and 416 Rigby are on my short list of 'will haves' with the 257 probably the next one. I don't have very many gaps in my lineup until you get to the 500's I'm just trying to figure out what to make this ugly Savage into. BTW you are absolutely right about the 35Whelen, I love that rifle.

Jake, Sorry to bug you again. I was wondering if you could share a. couple actual pics of this crossbow with me?

Xpedition Archery USED Scrapeline390X Sniper Gray Crossbow XACW1001 - Light Wear - Needs Bolt/Arrow Guide Spring UA5689

If it is in a decent shape, would you be willing to sell it for $100 shipped? IS it missing the retention spring that goes over the bolt?
Thank you Ferenc
